D90 Owners Thread - Anything D90 related

Hi guys,

Apologies if this has been asked before but..

Had my D90 for a couple of weeks now and I'm after another lens for mainly portrait work.

Already have my 50mm 1.8, 18-70 & 28-105 (not sure whether the latter two are up to achieveing the quality for paid work).

Not sure whether to go for a 85mm 1.8 or Tamron 17-50/ 28-75. Also considered a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 for more general use as well. Budget is no more than £450.

Any of you lot have a weapon of choice for portrait work ?

Any other suggestions ?

I have a SanDisk VideoHD (which is Class 4) in my D90 and have not had any problems recording HD video with it - not that I use the video very often.

OK, thanks for that guys - I've currently got a class II and its just not up to the job (first baby on the way!).
 
Does anyone own the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG?

I bought one not long ago (used, from here), and to be honest, not too chuffed with the quality of it......seems a little soft to me...

I used to have a sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 and that used to produce good sharp pictures. The 24-70 seems to miss-focus at times....Taken a few pictures and when uploading onto the laptop, am very disappointed at times.... :(
 
OK New to the D90 club, after a LOT of researching and reading reviews etc I got a D90 with the 18-105 kit lens. I have a fuji S9600 bridge camera at the moment and the D90 is amazing. I was messing about and took perfectly good shots of a dim room in my house only lit with a small lamp. :cool:

I have also ordered a Tamron AF 70-300 lens off ebay (brand new) so look forward to trying that to as it has pretty good reviews

50mm f1.8 is great for portraits. Not sure what are you missing with that one?

85mm is good for portraits too if you're using Full Frame camera, but since D90 is not one it's just too long.

I'd use 50/1.8 for it has a wide enough Aperture for blurring the background.

I'm using Nikkor 35mm f1.8 for portraits and it's a wonderful lens. It's cheap and works as a 52mm on D90 which is fine for portraits.

I'd say you don't need another lens for what you need, because 50/1.8 should be enough. Or consider this 35/1.8 lens.
 
Hi guys

Having had to sell my D90 six months ago I'm now back in the market to get another one. I have looked at the new D7000 but tbh I can't justify the extra cost as to what i would gain over the awesome D90.

Last time round I had the 50mm 1.8 which i think ill get again along with the 35mm but im unsure which zoom to get? I previously had the 18-200mm vr2 which was great but I found I wasn't really using the long end that much so i'm looking at the 16-85mm and wondered if anyone has any experiance with this lens?

Also what do you think the ultimate dx lens line up would be?

Yeah i considered it but i think the wide end of the 16-85 would be of more importance to myself rather than the 105mm of the kit lens.

Again though if i purchased the 35mm and 50mm primes would there be any real justification to get the 16-85mm?

What do you think is the dream line up of lenses is for the D90?

i guess it depends on what you shoot, etc. but i think my dream line up at the moment would be:

14-24mm f2.8
24-70mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8

i don't really use primes at the moment (but have a 35mm f1.8), though I do enjoy the very wide end of my sigma 10-20mm for landscapes/cityscapes

Nikon's 70-200 f2.8 MUST be on the list. Faultless. (note that I have the VRI version which is fine on the DX format of D90). I use this lens more than any. A pleasure to use. Don't worry about the cost - look after it and you can sell it for what you paid for it - but you won't sell it!

I brought a D90 yesterday, took the 16-85mm over the kit lens. It is a fantastic lens, sharp even wide open and feels well balanced and well made.

I think if you got the 35mm and 50mm you would miss the range of a zoom lens. But this depends on what type of Photography you do, primes would be great for street photography or if you need a really shallow FOD.
 
I was doing some test shots with my wife's D90 this morning.
According to the camera there were no images on the card.
Took 4 shots and put them in my card reader and saw there were 8 shots, the camera obviously not recognising the first 4 even though they were taken with the camera just yesterday.
This has happened a couple of times this morning.
Checking another card shows the same message even though there are images on the card from a shoot the other week.
One time when re-seating the card it didn't even recognise the card at all. Took it out and replaced it and it was OK but still didn't show the 'old' pics.
Pictures aren't locked or protected as far as I can see.
Anyone else had this problem or can shed some light?

not heard that before, but maybe do a factory reset on the body?
 
Just tried that, no difference.

As it happens, I was able to try it on another body with the same result.
So I'm thinking it's a card thing. I know my wife usually deletes instead of formatting so I wonder if it's something to do with that.
 
Just joined the club, upgraded my D60, can't wait to get out and about after reading all of this thread!
 
I saw on another forum someone saying the D90 is well known for wacky metering, anyone else heard of this or know links? certainly news to me in my research before buying
 
Well i've used mine in several awkward situations and differing levels of light and it has seemed fairly good to me.

Have you formatted the card in the camera?

your not taking shots in Raw and Jpeg are you
if you take 4 shots on that setting you create 8 pics on the card but the camera only shows 4 shots??

Check all the pictures are different
 
Haven't had my D90 long ( a few weeks) and did my first paid job, photographing a baby 2 weeks old. I have posted this elsewhere on the forum but thought I would show a couple of photos in here. I am so far VERY happy with the camera and VERY impressed with its low light ability

These were shot just using natural light inside a house and no tripod

I was in currys today and spotted the Nikon D90, liked the look of it. I am looking into getting a DSLR camera but theres no rush. I want to get the right camera for me. Dont know which one?! But this did catch my eye.

I have not looked through all this thread tbh its very long! Just a few questions: How old is this camera? Is it good? Would it do as i want to take up photography professional in the future you know weddings etc. What other lens can you put on it and whats the difference in the lens?

I am no expert on the D90 but I am sure its a few years old now.

The D90 is an excellent camera in my opinion an ALL the reviews I found. I read it was good in low light with little noise at hight ISO and from what I have found this seems correct. Its also easy to use with excellent menus etc.

I looked at the D5000 first but the extras on the D90 swayed it for me and of course going to the shop and holding it. I just could not get away with the Canon.

For pro-work everyone will say you need one of the £2000 Nikons but I don't agree personally. Like I say I am no expert but the D90 is excellent in low light produces excellent photos and is pretty sturdy so why would it not be good enough for pro-work ? I am using mine for it :thumbs: plus its more important what's behind the camera (you) than fancy kit costing the earth

Thanks for that, well said i think, :thumbs: and i know nothing i am silly really i think you need all the really expensive stuff to be a pro. The D90 is alot of money as it is imagine trying to afford a 2000 one! :eek: I couldnt now!

Oh and your photos on here are lovely i love b&w ones, there really nice.

By the way I also have a fujifilm finepix S8000fd like you and its a cracking camera especially if you use it on P mode. Its still the best camera I have for macro shots :thumbs:

Thats ok , Do you? I am still getting use to it to be honest i am still learming about all the functions . I was learning about P mode on my course the other week still got to learn more its keepimg in my head when i come to take photos next!!

I ve been looking more into the nikon d90 doing all my research, i do like it! The fujifilm is not really mine to be honest its my boyfriends i am borrowing it!! Its better than my kodak!! I bought it for him a couple years ago and he has not use it much so i am getting some good use out of it now. Its come in handy :thumbs:

Macro shots still got to learn more on these! ;)
 
i wondered if there was a D90 thread and here it is:D

ive just recently bought a D90 and im currently using a 24-120 vr lens, completely new to dslr photography so will have a good read of this thread so i can learn how to use it.

No had my D90 long either but so far VERY happy with it. You made a good choice :thumbs:

i'm afraid i can't comment on the sb400 as i've never had one, but did consider getting one when i was looking to buy my first flash. but looking at the prices, i decided to invest a few extra £££ and get a 2nd hand sb600... which i'm really glad i did as it offers you so much more flexibility. if nothing else, from a purely practical sense in terms of being able to rotate and direct the light. worth considering :)

one just went on the sales forum for 125, and one for 145 so that's a rough guide on price. actually got mine from fleabay (as there weren't any available on here) and that cost me 120.
 
Just wanted to pop on here and say I got my D90 today. :D

My first DSLR, so I'm quite excited!

Suggestions on a good book to help me learn how to use it?
