D90 Owners Thread - Anything D90 related

Hello

One very proud D90 owner here. I've had it since early in the year and still absolutely love it! I get the hump if a day goes by and I haven't used it :)

I'll try to help where I can with any questions that are posted although I expect many of you will have a far better knowledge and understanding than I.

Has any body had what appears to be an error message of 'F--' on their D90?
I've looked it up in the hand book which states that it means a lens is not attached or it is not a CPU lens (which it is). I keep getting this message more and more frequently which is worrying. The handbook says that the error message should blink.. However, the one I get does not.

Any help will be much appreciated .

F-- means that the body and lens are not communicating, usually due to a bad electrical contact. I get that with my Tamron 90mm macro sometimes and i just give the lens a gentle twist and it goes away.
Some people have cured this by cleaning the contacts on the body and lens with an eraser, making sure that no bits get into the body.

I've only had this the once on my old 50 1.8, the reason for me was that the aperture ring wasn't locked at f/22.

Try cleaning the contacts.

I get fEE if the aperture ring is not locked at smallest aperture, not F-- like the Gee.

just went into Jessops and had a play.
It will be my next camera purchase...blown away isn't a good enough phrase to describe it

Yeah, you're probably right actually, this does ring a bell. A quick Google of the F-- problem suggests it's definitely a lens mount problem, where it's not connected properly.
 
Many thanks for the helpful replys guys / girls.. I will try cleaning the contacts later. It's not ever time I fire it up that it occurs but it has become progressively worse.

I use a Tamron 90mm macro, but pretty much any prime macro lens capable of doing 1:1 magnification is good, they are all sharp. It just depends what you want to take macro pics of. Longer focal length means more distance between end of lens and subject, good for skittish bugs, but also harder to hand hold. VR is useful if you want it to double as a portrait lens, but not much use for 1:1 macro.
 
tamron 90mm here as well, it's razor sharp as a portrait lens!!!

I've just seen a product on Amazon that I'd like to hear any opinions on - its called an Opteka .35x HD² Super Wide Angle Panoramic Macro Fisheye "lens" although when you read into it, its an adapter and apparently for the D90. It retails for £30.

I have a Nikon 18-55 lens kit and a Tamron 70-300 and am not sure if it will "screw on" to either of these lenses. Reading between the lines from the reviews I've read are that it produces "average" images - with especially blurry edges - but that if you want a cheapo fisheye lens, its a good toy to play around with.

Does anyone here have one? And would you recommend it with the D90?

I'm tempted, as I would love to have a fisheye lens, but I do like to aim for sharpness and quality in my photos...although, alas, I doubt whether I'll ever have the money to obtain it! :'(

Sharpness and quality is as much to do with your shooting ability as it is with the depth of your pockets.

I can't imagine that the item you are enquiring about is a lot of cop really.

I ve been using a Sigma 150mm macro for the last couple of years recently with a D90. Its excellent and has a very good reputation, the Tamron 90mm is also good. The Sigma is more expensive and heavier but also much better built. Review here

You need to decide what you are likely to be doing macros of. If its live insects Id advise a longer focal length as you are further away from the critters and dont frighten them away so much. For 1.1 the 150 Sigma is approx 10inches, 25cms away which is still to close a lot of the time.

Well you have 18-55 covered so no real point in duplicating unless you want one lens for everything then the answer would be the Nikon 18-200 if you can afford one.
If you are happy with two lenses then the Nikon 55-200VR is a no brainer at the mo as its been discontinued replaced by a 55-300VR, and is v cheap, about £120.
Its also a very sharp lens right throughout its range, the 18-200(which I have) gets a bit soft at the long end. The 70-300VR is a bit better than the 55-200VR but is also a lot bigger heavier and 3x more expensive. I also have a new 80-200f2.8 and my friends Nikon 55-200VR is as sharp, in fact I m about to buy one as a walk about lens as I ve been so impressed by his and they are so cheap at the moment. Lots of good reviews for the 55-200 about heres a couple

i like to use SanDisk Xtreme (Class 10) cards in my d90, i have 2 of those and a 2gb Ultra.

i'm off on hols shortly, and although the above will be more than enough i'm sure, i was thinking about picking up a cheapish 4gb card as a backup. would a lower class (4 or 6) be ok for just casual walking-around snaps?

I have only ever used the bog standard Sandisk cards in mine and have not had any problems.

This type, usually between £5-7 at Morrisons.

Got a couple of the class 6 cards and they work fine with the D90.

sounds like i should be ok, the 'lower class' 4gb cards are more readily available and cheaper, so that's what i'd be looking for... looks like i'll be ok! :clap:

got my D90 about 20 minutes ago :D charging the battery and gonna take it out on my lunch break :)

well after having my 500d for three weeks and regretting not getting the d90 I finally gave into temptation and picked one up this morning! Loving it so far.

Yes my first DSLR after years of film Nikons an awsome piece of kit can't imagine anyone regretting buying one, enjoy it.

What made you decide you prefered the D90? I'm sort of stuck in the middle, not sure which to choose, but currently leaning towards the D90.
 
the 500d felt a bit basic, my problem was handling the d90 after i had bought the 500d. the nikon is a much more advanced camera than the canon. There is plenty to lear with it so I dont think ill "outgrow" this. plus it doesnt feel plasticky either, it seems much more well made.

How a camera feels is very important. The D90 feels 'sturdier' but its also heavier. I've been using a friend's D90 the past week or so, and I'm worried if I get the Canon (its the 550D I'd be looking at) I'll miss things like the top LCD screen which I find I'm using a lot.

I just think the D90 is a great camera and I'm worried if I don't get one I'll regret it.

The D90 is very well built and does feel good, especially with a grip. Unfortunately I need a bit more in terms of ISO performance so am having to sell mine and get another D700. It's a shame because its such a great camera, it does feel strange using a crop body though after using full frame exclusively for a few weeks,
 
Can anybody please tell me what speed in MB/s, the D90 writes 720p HD at? I know you need to get a fast writing SD/SDHC card for video, but I'm getting confused with all the classes and brand names whilst trying to determine what I actually need.

Is 15MB/s going to be fast enough for the top write speed needed at 720p, or do you actually need to go to 20MB/s? I'm weighing up Sandisk Ultra versus Sandisk Extreme and the cost seems to be nearly double for the extra 5MB/s...

My D90 arrived yesterday and after 2 hrs to charge the battery and have a look at the manual i took my first pics with a nikon. WHAT a difference:) after my old Sony a100.
