You might be right, my purchase was ok, very quick and correct item but i have since found numerous reviews for this retailer and some people have had some bad experiences........i wont take the chance again
 
Right, I decided to bite the bullet and get a new one, was a bit peeved that Jessops wouldn't knock £15 off the price to match that of Park Cameras, but I'm an impatient sod and don't want to wait!

The wife should be home with it within an hour, can't wait. Just weighing up whether to sell or keep my D60, if I sell I could get a grip or another lens.

I don't know Philx's situation, but I infer from the glee at which he's got one over on the man by using "his boss's card" there's some tax fraud going on here. I'd rather pay the tax than break the law.

Philx, my apologies in advance if you are a VAT-registered business and using the camera solely for business purposes; however I fail to see why you would need to use someone else's card if you were.

Hope no-one from HMRC reads these forums.

In terms of D90 prices, I would recommend buying new from Jessops through Quidco. Then you get a web discount but are dealing with a bricks and mortar store which is invaluable if things go wrong.

Dman, I would recommend new @ £625 with 2 years warranty than unknown second hand with no warranty @ £550. Warranties are not transferable.

Boss is obviously registered, i bought the cam on the company card because more often than not i do work for the company using the cam. I look after him, he looks after me. No fraud going on here as all above board, if they investigated they would find the cam in the companys name, however you could be accused of slander for assuming there is tax fraud! like i had to explain all that to you????.

Well, the battery is charged, I've had it out of the box and played with the AF on my previously manual 50mm, but I'm yet to click the shutter!

It's a LOT of money bearing in mind I have a D60 already, and I'm still undecided whether to keep it. I have a feeling that a couple of clicks will make up my mind, but I'll have another look in the morning.

Damn, DHL arrived at 5pm yesterday with my new sigma 10-20mm lens for my D90 but I didn't get back home in time. Now I'll have to wait until Monday. boo hoo
 
whats the typical price that i can expect to pay for a second hand d90?

typical recent prices depending on condition i've noticed them from £500-550
compared to £650 new
 
they hold their price quite well then, i think a d90 will be the camera that i eventually upgrade to be it second hand or brand new.
 
I was looking at second hand, about £525-£550 was the going rate with around £12-£16k actuations. I decided that an extra £100 was worth paying for the two years warranty and clean shutter count.

You mean libel, not slander. And you owe me no explanation, you choose to tell me what you will.

If you read my post again you'll see I've already considered the possibility that you're VAT registered, and apologised in advance if I had misinterpreted your story.

Either the camera belongs to the company and not you in which case you haven't paid for it and you've saved nothing.

Or you have paid your boss for it (minus the VAT) and to all intents and purposes you consider you own it. Which, as far as I know, would be tax fraud. I do not know the exact details of the case, and I accuse you of nothing. I am simply stating the way I see it in a hypothetical sense.

If you've paid your boss a penny for the camera he'll have difficulty accounting for that sum tax-wise. Hypothetically.

I comment on this because you chose to discuss it. If you would rather not have what you post commented on, I suggest you don't post it at all.

Seems to be alot of D90 owners out there!

Just found this thread, and only found the site a week or so ago. I bought my D90 back in Nov 08. I sold a Canon 400D + Kit, + 70-300 Signma APO and put a bit extra towards to get it and I've never looked back.

I just didn't get on with the Canon, a pity really. I liked the feel, usability but almost never shot keepers. The D90 is a dream. If I want it sharp and colourful and don't have the time to really think and set it up, sit in Ap Priority mode or Program and just take the shot, 99% of the time it captures what I want. If I want to take shots with more thought, there's enough to play with and change to try loads of different things. Best of both worlds for me.

Looking forward to reading others posts on here.
 
Well, I had a good use of the D90 the other night at a non league match, took both the D90 and D60 and was blown away by the ISO performance of the D90, got half decent shots at 2500 and 3200 ISO under very poor floodlights and mist and with a limited aperture of 4.5 to 5.6. The shots can be seen here.

Got the D60 out with the 18-135mm with a slightly wider aperture, struggled at 400 and was useless at 800. I think I'm going to sell the D60 now in favour of a longer lens or something like a 16-85mm.

Great camera though, chuffed to bits with it.

the d90 is miles ahead on the d60 in low light condition
 
Just used the average 55-200mm, with a max aperture of f/4.5.

The more expensive Nikon option, still only a max aperture of f/4.5 but from what I've read, a huge improvement over the cheaper Sigma and Tamron equivalents. They're around £300 second hand which is what I'm looking at.

I agree with that, its not till you make the jump from d60 to d90 you realise how much of an improvement it is, gorgeous camera.

I do alot of football with a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and now using the d90 it is so much nicer and easier for me.
 
I have the 70-300 VR and it's very, very good. I really like it. Sharp and the VR works extremely well, you can see it in the viewfinder.
 
what tripods do people use for this, iv got a manfrotto but its only for a light camera, 715b or something (im at work), and want something that still packs up quite small is relatively lightweight and has the adaptability of the head like manfrotto.

Iv recently started to play with the d90 more but still limited, when playing with the exp iv noticed some low and hi measures aswell what are these and what would be the best time to use tham (if at all)

The 50 1.8 is on my lens most of the time, sometimes change to an 18-135 or 55-200, to be honest the Sigma doesn't get anywhere near as much use as it should.

What ISO does everyone use for general stuff? Do you keep it on the 200 or knock it down to 100?
 
I read somewhere that ISO 100 or lower gives the camera less dynamic range so it was best to use it at 200. ISO 200 is the D90s default ISO and I find I don't need to go lower, 200 produces very clean images.

If I want to use a fixed aperture and shutter speed I use auto ISO up to 1600, auto ISO is really useful and gives me more time taking the pictures rather than faffing around changing settings every minute.

If you want to stay safe I would say up to 800/1000 wont give you a lot of noise.
 
Struggling to get sharpness with my recently aqquired sigma 70-200 f2.8. Images appear a bit washed out almost. any ideas anyone?

Interesting many of you have upgraded from a d40. I currently have a d40, If I can get a job soon will upgrade too.

What's the video quality like? It's hard to gauge on youtube videos. Is it hard to manual focus, what is it like with moving subjects, i.e motorsport.

I think live view would be handy, being vertically challenged shooting over someone's head isn't easy. Also for motorsport having to look for the bike then pop down to viewfinder.

What is the screen like, I know it's a big improvement on the d40 and others.

i started DSLR with a D40, fantastic little thing but wanted to explore more. Sony seemed to offer alot more for the same price and so jumped to sony and it had an awesome live view system, which makes the D90 feel rubbish to be honest.

However, I still jumped back to nikon, as i prefer the feel and touch of nikon, along with menus etc.

Just joined the D90 "owners club" and have to say the initial pics taken with the D90 are a lot better quality than the already great D60 I had. Looking forward to gleaming hints and tips of folk on this page and hope to add a few over time !!

I have been using a D90 & Sigma 18-200 when out walking as I often want a quick change in focal length. The Sigma was okay on my D50 but the sensor on the D90 seems to show more of the faults with the lens. I have now bought one of the new Nikon 18-200 VRIIs and it is far better than the Sigma so will be on my D90 most of the time.
