I am due to start a course next month and need a camera for when I start. I really don't know that much so any help is appricated.

Jessops do the D90 with a 18 - 105mm lens for £679 and they do the D5000 WITH 18-55 AND 55-200mm VR Twin Lens Kit for £499.

I really don't know what to do because there is quite a big difference in rice but you seem to be getting a better bargain with the D5000. As I am new to photography is the D5000 the better option or would you notice a massive difference between the phots each can take?

If it were me, as a D5000 owner, and I had the money I wouldn't hesitate to take the D90 deal. You get a better camera with less need to use menus for settings and an internal focus motor giving you a wider choice of lenses in the future....which could well save you the extra initial expense.

Hi Amy,

I would recommend going straight for the D90 + 18-105mm as well if funds allow.

My wife was in a similar situation regarding the same decision last year...she ended up going for the D5000 despite all the advice but I've just convinced her to upgrade to the D90 and she is very pleased.

Also there are some much better deals out there than £679 for the D90+lens.

I personally would go for a D90...if it weren't for the fact I use the vari angle LCD all the time!

You can try getting the D90+lens s/h and save a good 100£ or so over the price you quote. I would go for the D90 too, more control generally a camera you can grow with.

As far as i can remember you started another thread with similar question which resulted in a very heated debate... I think you can't go wrong with any camera. Buy what your says :)

I will have to see if I can find the D90 cheaper than the £679 then, I thought that was the best quote out there. Can anyone recommend any good websites?

I thought I would ask the question on a different thread as I know not everyone reads the same ones.

Back to the D90 it is!

£679 with the 18-105 kit lens is about the right price - I wasn't able to find one cheaper.

honestly, as a D90 owner, I would buy the D5000 right now. You can get the d5k plus both lenses for 120 less than the D90 body. That is too good to pass up considering they have the same sensor (D90 has better processor). Yes, the d5k has menu interfacing versus the button interfacing on the D90. Yes, the D5k has no built in motor. However, the 18-55 + 55-200 is a very competent combo, plus the 120 you'll save on the price plus another 40 quid you'll get the 35 1.8. I'd take the d5k plus 3 lenses over the D90 plus the 18-105 anyday.

thanks
rick

I have a d5000 and can not fault it for image quality on the other hand when you start using all the different settings it's a bit annoying having to go through the menus to set anything up. But for a novice it's a fantastic set up I have 18-55 3.5 vr and 55-200 vr good look and have fun

I have 2 D5000 and think they are great. Save money now and invest in decent lenses later. I got the 24-70 and 70-200 and they look great!

The sensor on D90 and D5000 is the same and I've not had a problem with using the menus

I started with a D40x and after 10 months upgraded to a D90 - the lack of internal focus motor was a big reason. If you're serious about getting into photography I'd go with the D90 as you can grow with it. I've had mine over two years now and I love it.

I think the only lens you are going to miss is 50mm f1.8 with not having an internal focus motor. All other new lenses come with internal focus motor nowdays IMHO. You can always get 35mm f1.8 2nd hand (slightly more expensive than 50mm) but a better lens because of wider view you'll get from it.
I would still recommend buying D5000 or D3100 because if you are starting in photography you don;t know how are you going to like it... If you like it then you can always upgrade. If not you still have a good decent camera with you. my 2 cents :)

What's Grays's website? Thank you

If you are stretching your finances to get the D90 & lens, Grays will usually give you 6 months to pay at zero interest. Look on their website under Finance.
