No
To avoid vibration problems I want to use "mirror lock up" on my D90 however the handbook only refers to this for sensor cleaning. Can pics be taken safely with the mirror raised.

No, mirror lockup on the D90 is only for sensor cleaning, as the manual says. The D90 does not have mirror lockup, only shutter delay. The shutter opens about 1s after the mirror flips up when you press the shutter button in this mode.

Edit: See p183 of the manual

The D90 does not have a specific lock up feature, but if you use the time delay with the remote I think the mirror comes up 1 or 2 seconds before the shutter opens.
Hope this helps.

The shutter still opens straight away after the mirror flips up in timer delay, unless you set exposure delay to on. (d10 in custom settings).
