Why does the D90 have a Lo and High setting for ISO. Why not just the actual speeds. With film I always tried to shoot with 100 if possible but the lowest the D90 goes is 200. Is there a drawback to going on to the low setting? Obviously the high setting would give very bad noise but I just don't understand why Nikon have set it up this way with the Lo and Hi settings.:shrug::thinking:
 
The Hi and Low settings are software based and not actual ISO settings. The D90's base ISO is 200, and this is the lowest you should go, unless absolutely necesary. The same with the Hi settings.
You may find a detrimental effect to IQ buy using the Low and Hi settings. In the Uk, its very rare you will need to use the Low setting anyway.

Ok, right, I understand now, thanks. I may have been tempted to use it (Lo) in certain situations if the quality hadn't suffered but I knew there had to be a drawback for Nikon to label it in this fashion. ;)
 
Im pretty sure the loss of quality is negligable, but still some nonetheless.
 
I keep a few ND filters in my kit it means that I don't have to reduce the iso if I want to for example use a large aperture. The image tends to get noisy ( what we called grainy back in the day) when using the hi/lo settings
