D90 > D700

Short of a D3s it doesn't get much better than the D700 in low light!

Its pretty much in a different leaugue to be honest.
I went from a D700 to a D90, and Although the D90 is excelent, the D700 is just something else.
Not only for the High ISO, but the handling, feel, options, customisation etc etc etc

for football I imagine the high-iso would be the positive but loss of some reach would be the negative (although with the glass you have I can't see that being an issue!)

The ability to shoot at ISO5000 (and 6400) and get pictures more useable than what a D300 could offer was what sold it to me. There's also an added cleanliness or clarity the D700 has, I guess it's the FX that does it. You will get noise still on underexposed shots, but the noise isnt as bad

Downside of course is that you'll lose reach unless you want to crop, and you can crop more on a D700 than (in my case) a D300. I'd imagine a D90 to be similar

Lens wise, I used to use a 50mm prime and Sigma 50-150. The 50mm has been kicked out in favour of an 85mm, the 50-150 doesnt work on the D700, so the 70-300 is being used much more.

if you don't want the expense of full frame, the new D7000 full due details out this tuesday is likely to have very good low light performance.

I shoot a lot of theatre production photos and have found the D700 superb in low light. I had previously been using a D300 and thought that was impressive but have been blown away by the results from my 700.

Spooks

I've just read a comparision review in WhatDigitialCamera of the D300s vrs. the D700 (ok not D90 vrs. D700), but it really picks up on the pro's/con's of FX vrs DX.

Might be of interest to you?

Notre Dame, a couple of weeks ago, shot using available (flood) lighting. f/3.5, 1/50th, 3200 ISO. A4 print with NO NR done in PP shows almost no noise, even in the shadows. D700

Couldn't agree more tbh.

Got the link to that by anychance

Think I d wait a few days and see how the D90 replacement is, out on the 15th Sept.
Reputed iso24,500 and 15-16mpix. Could even be better noise wise than the D700 as its a new sensor design with the electronic bits on the back of the sensor not the surface like current designs so more light can reach the individual sensor pixels and give better noise. Worth the wait in my opinion till its been tested by the mags etc especially as your into soccer where the cropped sensor is a help.
Also a rumour that the D700 is discontinued pending something better.

Interestingly, what's the date on that article about Best Buy?

Have they really not stocked it for over a year, due to a replacement coming?

WHSmith's, pay the nice lady the cover price and you'll have your very own copy of the magazine. OR, ignore the signs they now have and just stand in the way like the other tight gets and just read it in the shop...

Oops did nt notice the date on that link! Dont know if the dates wrong or I linked to the wrong one.

It was being talked about on Nikon rumours a couple of weeks back

Also saw somewhere else on the net that said it was rumoured to be discontinued in China, but at the end of the day these are rumours and we will have to wait and see what actually happens. The general consensus seems to be though that the D700 is due an update some time this year or early next.

I just upgraded to the D700 from the D90 which i am still keeping. The reason for doing so was a wedding shoot this weekend just gone, the camera and the 24-70 lens was fantastic and was rewarded with some very low light shots hand held in the church and the reception which with the D90 wouldnt have got or would have had to use a tripod and ask guest to stand still.

May your photos be ripped off and given away over the internet like IPC's magazine is.

Even though I am a Canon user the D300 is what I would have purchased if I did not have alot of canon kit. My m8 has a D300 and it is great in low light compared to my Canon EOS 400D, it was in a completely different league. At least my EOS 7D is now more than a match for the D300, which really set the mark for the 7D to beat.
A great camera the D300 !

I used both a D90 and D700 at the weekend for a wedding in a very poorly lit register office.

The D700 at 2500 ISO was excellent, a bit of NR in Lightroom and job done. The D90 at ISO 1600 in the same room was very poor and needed a lot more work.

As a result, I'm now selling up all my DX kit to buy a second D700.
