Hi all i am looking to buy two aftermarket batterys for my grip and was wondering if anybody could name a company that will do them for the D90 as i have heard there is an problem with some aftermarket battery working in the D90.

I know a lot of you are going to say buy the Nikon ones but money is tight at the moment so until i have £35-50 to get Nikon i would settle for cheapo's:|

Will it take re-chargeable AA's ? I have read that quite a few people with the D300 / D700 grip use them.

Yeah it does and i have bought 2600mah duracell but to be honest they dont seem to last.

I have put them in and they have went dead faster that the Nikon battery alone so i am looking for 2 aftermarket ones.

They need a few charge / discharge cycles to achieve full capacity, most of the users reported good results.

Just checked on Fred Miranda, they all recommend Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries, they also mention setting the camera menu as to which batteries are in the grip, not sure if that is the case with the D90, but worth checking.

Yeah your spot on you need to set it in menu but i have done this also, i will check out the Sanyo's.

Cheers.

Got a spare battery from Ebay, around £8 and works perfectly. Mfrs love scaremongering to make the gullible buy their own overpriced replacements..........

I wouldnt use AAs at any price, have had enough of them in my Fuji 9500 and flashguns. Even the new tech batteries that dont self discharge in practice are little better in my experience.

And do you have a D90 also if so what make of battery or which buyer did you use if you dont mind me asking.

I'd imagine any that are being sold now will work in the D90, but the only way to guarantee 100% compatibility is to buy the genuine Nikon ones.....

sorry, havnt got the ebay details, but I think any will work. I havnt checked the battery status within the menu, will check tonight out of interest, but it doesnt bother me either way!

My problem is as i first posted i have read some aftermarket batterys don't work in the D90 as they have done something to it to stop it taking aftermarket batterys but i thought maybe somebody would have got round this as they do.

just checked even the in depth battery info on the menu works perfectly....

Nikon seem to be able to tweak each new camera body so that it doesn't work with aftermarket batteries, but the manufacturers always get around it. I have a pile of aftermarket batteries that worked fine in the D70/s, D80 and D200 but refuse to work in the D300....

No problems running AAs though :)

Double AA's are out for me to much time charging. I just need somebody to comfirm i can use a aftermarket battery in my D90, if somebody with the same camera can let me no there's is running fine on an aftermarket that would be great.

er kinda thought I had done that...........................................

Genuine EN-EL3e batteries are about £30 on Amazon Marketplace, I got a couple back in November (when they were nearer £20) as I had so much trouble finding reliable aftermarket batteries for my D90.

Any tips on where the grips can be had for a reasonable price? They've really gone up in price since the start of the year.

Sorry i did'nt realise you had the same camera. thanks.

Can you tell me what make it was or company as there is a few on ebay and i dont want to order the wrong one.

Thanks Defiance i have saved the page i will maybe wait and see how you get on with it if you dont mind letting me know.

It does but would like to know it works ok as i have read about a few people having bother with the D90 and aftermarket ones.

Would also be interested to know, as i could do with another battery too. How are you getting on with the D90? I've never used the video feature yet!

As flash said, if you are that worried about aftermarket batteries working buy genuine nikon ones. If the aftermarket ones do not work then they are not such a good buy.

Yeah i no but i was planning on getting two so dont want to fork out for Nikon ones if i can get a cheaper option as i want to keep my original one as a backup.

If it comes to it i will get the Nikon ones but would rather not (Credit Crunch killing me).nlol.

I've ordered one, so it should be here by midweek.

Will let you know how i get on with it on due course.

And are any of the third party grips any good?

I've got the YXTM Grip (for D80) and love it, no idea how it compares to the Nikon one, but considering it was a third of the price I can't really fault it. I've got two genuine EN-EL3e's in it and the D90 shows them both on "Battery Info" menu option, with the shots taken and % life of each remaining. Not had any problems with it, seems well built if a little plastic compared to the D90 body.

Where did you get that?

Second-hand from T4 Cameras in Swindon. Came with two aftermarket EN-EL3e's, but neither worked in the D90 (as expected)

Got the Inov8 battery today from play.com

It charged fine, went in the camera and works perfectly. Battery charge display is correct and working, and it also registers the detailed battery info in the menus.

I know from past experience that this battery will last as well as the OEM one.
