hello,

Just looking for some advice really - I'm going to be getting a D90 in January, and was pretty set on getting a nikkor 80-200 2.8 (non VR) to couple it up with, but just wondering what others might do in the same situation. I am going to shooting a lot of street photography. but also hoping on going to some car rally events and other sport events. Also going to be shooting quite lot in low light, so needs to be fast glass.

Other options that I'm thinking about are..

18-200 VR Nikkon - Would be a generally good walk about lens, but not great creating great bokeh and not very quick, I would also buy either a sigma 30mm 1.4 or a 50mm 1.4 or a 85mm 1.8.

85mm 1.4 - Would be an amazing piece of kit in low light, but it would fail me indoors with the focal length.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Ben.

I would avoid the 18-200 personally, are you just getting the D90 body only? If not I would have a look at the 18-70mm Nikon plus either the 70-200mm Nikon VR or the Tamron/Sigma alternatives.

I'm thinking about one of these myself, I would get the Nikon but its too expensive, the Tamron has very slow AF (but great optics) - so it will probably be the Sigma (WHE do it with 2xTC for £630) which seems to be a good compromise. If £600 is too much then the 70-300mm VR Nikon at £300 is probably worth a look too...

I was very close to buying a 85mm F1.4 but decided to replace my 50mm f1.8 Nikon with the Sigma f1.4 instead and will probably look to pick a 85mm f1.8 (which is still meant to be very good) plus a couple of SB-600's for the same money...

Yes, just the D90 body. Want it to be fixed aperture really.

I'll have a look at the ones you have recommended.

Hi Ben -This isn't answering you're question but just wanted to give you a heads up in case you havn't got your camera paid for and ordered yet!

The d90 (and almost all cameras) are going to be increasing in price by as much as 20-30% in January. How do I know?........ I called 5 shops/online stores to buy a d90 today and all of them were sold out. When I asked if I could pay now and then get it sent out once stock arrived, most told me i'd have to pay the new increased prices once they were known in Jan. All (no exageration) of them told me prices would be increasing! Jacobs was the only store that would let me pay the current price (£569). Jacobs and Bristol Cameras both said increases would be 20-30% but are waiting to see the exact increases Nikon slap on the products but retailers have been warned that this will be the ball park increase

Does this apply to lenses?

I had the 80-200 on a D80 and it's a lovely lens, especially for the money and even more so compared to an 18-200. The only thing is you really need a battery grip on the camera otherwise it feels very front heavy.

Dunno, but I bought my D300 a year ago today and on Boxing Day they dropped the price by £100....

I know, I've heard this rumor. I'm a little gutten tbh, as I'm getting the D90 for my bday, which is late Jan. So no way of getting it early, unless I go into my overdraft big time.

I ordered a D90 from warehouse express just yesterday and when I checked they were at the "last few".

Was gonna post up a linky but when I checked just now you have to place on Backorder meaning there oos now...

No way you can treat yourself before they`re all gone? Try somewhere else?

Be a shame to have to pay a bit more... :(

How can they (Nikon... whoever) do this? I thought the price would be coming down if anything in the new year...

They and all other manufacturers. It's due to the Global Economic recession....the £ is nowhere near what it used to be.
