Ok think the title says the basic.

Currently to use them off camera, I use the flash on my camera to trigger them, but I was wondering if there was a cheap way to trigger them without onboard? I don't mind if it's wired or wireless, I was just wondering if I can do it a bit better without breaking the bank!

I have tried searching but there's a lot if info and I couldn't filter what was best for me!

Thanks :D

Those look reasonable - is 2sts basically 1 for each flash? How easy are they to use?

Thanks : D

1 goes on the camera and then one goes on a flash, I have 2 flashes so got 2 sets and now have a spare left over for another flash if/when I get one :)

Very easy to use, just switch them on and stick them on the flash / camera! :D

I noticed that listing says 2 sets/4 transceivers so I think will do both flashes for that price? Or am I being dense? :D

You are correct, it will do both flashes! :)

And you have a spare left over if you ever get another flash!

Out of curiosity, why are you not wanting to use CLS (The in built Nikon system?)

Because with cls your on camera flash is still going off, and while it's not a lot it is still there :) I'd just like to have other options is all!

Agree'd there's a few things I want to use my flash for and just can't due to limitations

Not necessarily - there's always the SU800 which is a dedicated CLS master without flash (communicates only through IR). However, as with everything Nikon, it's a tad on the expensive side, and won't suit everyone's pocket.

Yep, it can affect the final image. Most of the time it's not noticeable, but when photographing highly reflective objects you'll see the inbuilt flash reflected, and when photographing subjects close to a background you'll often see a shadow generated by the inbuilt flash.

As I said in most circumstances using the inbuilt flash as the commander is fine, however there are a number of situations where a "flashless" commander system is desirable.

Then I agree witht the above post - RF603's (or RF602's but these have been replaced with 603's) are the way to go so long as you don't mind setting all the light sources manually.

You can also get a filter that fits on the camera hotshoe that covers the built I'm flash and lets the cls signal reach the sb800 and sb600 but blocks the visible light. it is nikons own accessory, but sort I can not remember the part number, can tell you when I get home tonight

I've got one, but the problem is that it can severely limit the range of the commander signal, making the remote firing hit and miss. I'm pretty sure it's really only designed be be used with the R1 macro flash kit where the flash units are normally no further than 10 inches away from the inbuilt flash.
