Which would be the better camera for fast accurate auto focus for active dog photography please. This is Hugo taken with a D810DSC_3074.jpg

A D500 but the person using it is far more important.

Someone very good with an old d7000 they bought off ebay for £100 will beat someone bad with a £6000 D5

I am toying with the idea of getting a D500 as a lot of my photos are of dogs running and jumping.

My favourite lens is the Nikon 70-200E FL ED

If a fair percentage of your shots are at the shorter end, the crop factor of the D500 MIGHT be a limiting factor but if the majority are at the long end (in both instances, I'm talking about the 70-200 lens), the extra apparent reach of the crop body might be an advantage. It all boils down to whether the D810's AF is fast enough really.

I'd favour the D810 even though it's a little older. I could never go back to a crop sensor after using full-frame and I really liked the D810 - I wish I hadn't sold mine.

Here's a quick comparison: https://cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D500-vs-Nikon-D810.

As for the 'extra reach' crop sensor users harp on about I'd still rather have the larger sensor and crop if necessary. The only exception being for long lens wildlife photography.

I've had both (and photographed a pair of fast Jack Russells running straight at me) and would choose the D500, it was probably a fraction better than the D850 I have now. Not so much in it for panning shots, but where they were running straight in then the D500 did a more accurate/reliable job in my opinion

Had both, recently sold the d810, still have d500, d850& z7

only reason i wouldnt use the d500 ober any of the other 3 is 8’d left it at home. They all have strengths and weaknesses but d500 strength is fast action over the others
