D810 files not recognised in Mac Finder

(mods, I hope this is the correct forum, please move if not!)

I've just purchased a Nikon D810 (hurrah!) and though I can edit the images in Lightroom, the NEF files don't have an image preview in Finder. This is not a big deal, just an annoyance!

I'm running Mac 10.8.5, which I assume is the limiting factor. Apple lists the D810 as supported under Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.07, which seems to need iPhoto 9.4.3 or above. As I read all that, I need to BUY iLife '11 in order to get the current iPhoto (which I never use) so I can then install Camera Raw 5.07. Does that sound right?

I really don't see a need to buy iLife, which I'll never open except under duress, just to get Camera Raw updated, so if there's another way to do this I'd sure appreciate any tips!

I might be wrong, but I understood the Camera Raw updates to be part of the OS, and shouldn't need an app to allow them to be installed. Have you tried a software update check on your Mac to see if the latest update is available ?

Yes, that would make perfect sense, but I have the latest OS updates (I just double-checked to make sure). As I read the Apple website FAQs I would need to update to at least Yosemite (10.9) but they also seem to be saying I need iLife to get the version of CameraRaw that has D810 support. I'd love to be wrong!
 
I have no issues with my RAW files from my D810/D750 in either LR or PS6. Adobe do support them. Just make sure you have the latest downloads and you'l be fine. Edited, sorry I just read your post probably I don't use iPhoto.

Oh, yes, I realise that Adobe support them. I can use Lightroom just fine. Its just getting Finder to give an actual image preview rather than a generic icon. I don't use iPhoto and never will, but it seems that in order to download the current Camera Raw I have to be running a current version of iPhoto. Go figure.
 
works fine on mac 10.10.5 seems you need an update, cheers mike. you had me looking to check. ;)
 
As I understand it, you do need a copy of iPhoto, Aperture or Photos to be installed in order to be offered Digital Camera RAW Compatibility updates.

iPhoto has been provided for free on new Macs for a fair while now (latterly iPhoto was offered as a free download for older qualifying Macs as well) and and Photos comes as part of Yosemite (MacOS10.10). I appreciate this doesn't help you much. Have you checked on the App Store to see if iPhoto is offered to you as a free download (maybe unlikely as it's been superseded, but worth a look)?

Your options appear to be:
- Live with the minor inconvenience.
- Buy or borrow an unused iLife DVD from someone who has upgraded their OS, and install iPhoto (it'll happily sit there unused).
- If your Mac will support it, upgrade to Yosemite which comes with Photos - I think it's a free upgrade from 10.8.

Disclaimer: obviously I could be wrong about all this.

I believe you've nailed it. I tried downloading updates to iPhoto and DCR, but they wouldn't install. Its not a big deal, but I'll probably upgrade to Yosemite at some point anyway.
