Forget this, it's all gone wrong.

My file sizes are too big I think. They appear in preview but when I post there is nothing there.

I've posted images from my website before just by right-clicking, selecting 'copy image' and posting here but this time it's not working, it's possibly because the file sizes are too large. Too tired to mess about any more now, I'll try again tomorrow.

I can see the top one of a dog if that is any help to you.
Is that off your website?

I see a picture of a dog.. not seeing the D810 relevance. I'm confused.

You're not trying to upload a full 36mp file are you? You can't.. the forum resizes. You shouldn't any way, as it's not fair to those that are on mobile devices who pay for data transfers. Host it somewhere that allows full res, such as flickr, and link to it.

I too see a snap shot of a dog in shadow definitely need some more explanation before I get the d810 reference unless the point your making is that it is capable of very average photos!

Eh?

OK, until I sort myself out I'll do it this way:

The pictures are a bit naff but they are just there to try out the new camera.

This first link takes you to a picture of my dog, Ollie, quickly taken one morning on the moors using a 28mm Nikkor on my new Nikon D810.

This second picture shows the same picture but with it heavily cropped to just show the dog.

The point of my thread is that I had some doubts about whether or not to get another D750 when the Command dial packed up after just a week. I decided that once bitten twice shy (I know, I was just unlucky but you know how it is) I wouldn't and forked out the extra for the D810 instead and was concerned as to whether the extra money was going to be worth it -- it is. I can't get over how clear the cropped picture is with very little apparent loss of quality and these pictures are just medium JPG's, the original NEF file shows the quality even more.

TBH for casual photography, the extra cost of getting the 36Mp sensor in a better camera is almost justified in that I can save money on cropping rather than buying a new lens (up to a point)!

Ok smartass :), what did you do?

Actually, this is rather odd as I can see one of my original pictures in the first post now but this is on the laptop but on the desktop PC where the picture should be is completely blank.

Not sure if your serious, but he has just cropped it.

Martin, you know the lens is more important than the camera body, IMHO anyway …… unless you are mega printing

If you are just posting to the web an image of up to a max 250k at 72 dpi at 1000 x 1000 max is all you need

and PP is important especially to adjust shadows and highlights if the light is anything other than very good

If you look at what can be achieved with say a Nikon 1, 10MB sensor with a good lens versus a D810 with say just the kit zoom you will see what I mean

Nothing wrong with getting a D800 or D810 but to do it justice you need good glass

and the range of light contrast in the dog image is really "beating the camera sensor up"

This is all getting very confusing, I'll have one more go:

1) There were supposed to be two pictures posted, one showing the dog and the other one cropped to show that almost no detail has been lost with such a severe crop; this is what has made me happy with the camera.

2) I know the photo is poor, it is just one I happened to have around when I thought I'd make the post as it serves the purpose -- see 1) above.

3) I messed up the showing of the pictures and my comment to Ulfric was not meant to imply 'how did you make the picture cropped?' but 'how did you get it to be shown on your post?'. The reason I have now found is that only I couldn't see the picture due to software problems on my PC.

4) I didn't intend to take up a lot of space on the forum with the size of picture, it was just how it turned out.

5) Had everything gone to plan, all would have been clear however it didn't, it wasn't and I surely regret posting it in the first place.

I'll try and explain what I mean another time and in another way so let's draw a line under this one and I'll put it down to experience (or inexperience perhaps).

but 'how did you get it to be shown on your post?'. The reason I have now found is that only I couldn't see the picture due to software problems on my PC.

If you quote his post, then use the BB editor, you'll see what he's done.

For ShinySideUp here are instructions ;
1. Open your cropped photo in a new tab on your browser.
2. Right click in the photo and select "copy image address"
3. Go back into this thread into the reply box
4. type "[ I M G ]" without spaces, then paste the image address, then type "[ / I M G ]" without spaces.
Bingo.

Now you try.
