D800e from abroad?

Morning folks

I'm interested in the D800e - my brother-in-law (also a keen tog) is coming over from Canada in a month or so. The D800e is a lot cheaper across there and I was tempted to ask him to get me one. I just wondered what the pitfalls were warranty wise and if it was a good idea or not.
 
You'll have to consider your tax responsibilities and see if it's worth it, it'll probably end up costing the same or maybe more.

even if it does work out cheaper, I think Nikon's warranty for camera bodies is location-specific, whereas lenses are worldwide.
 
If the body warranty is location specific then I would need to work something out.
 
Body warranty is location specific. I guess it depends if its a big enough price differential for it to be worth the risk
 
As I only do landscape its the E I'm after - price difference is £800.
 
I am not to sure,but won't your brother-in - law,be able to bring it in as a gift for you,in which case it shouldn't cost any more.

£800 is a big saving :)
 
Anything over £340 and you'll have to pay duty & VAT! Circumventing that deliberately is illegal.

That said, Nikon bodies do not come with an international warrantee; either way, is it worth breaking the law for?

However you decide to get it, I'm sure you'll love it :thumbs:
 
The warranty is the part that concerns me most.
 
When you are counting pennies it makes sense to investigate all angles. Decent lenses for it aren't exactly cheap either.

Not when you get caught evading tax and you have to repay the lost revenue + penalties + interest ;)
 
There is nowt wrong with counting pennies lad.
 
So from the comments here no one has never ever done any cash in hand work. Fair play.
 
Stick a lens on it, post the boxes over and dont forget to put a few strips of sticking plaster over the battery door and somewere else it can bee seen, why? the old type fabric sticking plaster gets dirty and looks tatty very quickly, good for your camera if you go abroad aswell.

Buy in uk.
Jessops are only charging £149 for extra 2 years of warranty.
Maybe other retailers offer that for less.havent checked

When I say intrigued I was being sarcastic. If it was arranged correctly there is no way that any criminal act could be proved to the satisfaction of a CPS lawyer keeping up their successful winning case percentage. I've known a CPS lawyer to lose a guilty plea in the past.
 
And all this criminal masterminding just to save a few hundred quid? Is the lack of a warranty on your £3000 body worth the few hundred saved? Only you can decide.

Tough love answer.... is pony up for a UK body and relax in the knowledge that your theoretical alter ego who imported the D800 just had an unexpected shutter failure at 5,000 clicks.

Apart from the existence of this thread proving intent you mean?

Btw, in the majority of cases the CPS won't even get a sniff at VAT fines.

At what stage did I say that I had ever considered not paying duties if importing? At the end of the day if I had been able to save some money then I would have gone for it, but not at the expense of a warranty. It just means the 70-200 will wait a little while.

Its the bit about Customs catching anybody that made me laugh. I wonder how many golfers visiting Florida over the last couple of decades have come back with different clubs.
 
Eljax you obviously don't work for Customs (in the past) and now Border Force...As Demilion has said, don't know what you are on about with your 'CPS Lawyers'.

Unfortunately strictly speaking the burden of proof is on you to proof that you bought it here, not on Border Force that you didn't buy it here. Granted likelihood used to be low, but current targeting systems are much more sophisticated.

And especially when you use alternative ports of entry it can be strict, especially for more expensive equipment it is a good idea to have the original invoice on you.

I've found that when comparing like for like, there really isn't much between the prices...
 
You can believe anything you like, the facts are there is ;) How ever in your scenario, unless it is nicely boxed with everything with it I think it is highly unlikely you get caught. But hey these days you'd be looking at several £100s in delivery charges if you do it that way ;)

If you were to bring it as a gift then there must not be any trade element, and the guidance also stipulate that there should be an occasional element to it, and most importantly it should be declared...And there is only a £40 threshold...

Just buy it here, help contribute to our schools, and hospitals and other infrastructure.
