D800 - will be out in November...

Very interesting spec if this proves to be true!

Hope you not taking nikonrumors as a confirmed report!

£2,500 not cheap - will 36mp really be better?

That's not really the question I have. The pixel pitch of a 36MP FX sensor would be roughly the same as the 16MP DX sensor in the D7000, and the D7000 really shines with good glass, so yes better certainly in the resolution dept, but maybe not with high ISO. The question, for me, really is, is 36MP going to be truly useful - probably for some, but others are just going to end up pushing pointless pixels around and using more storage.

I'd be happy with an 18MP FX format camera with amazing high ISO. Although the D7000's ISO performance is pretty damned good, it's no D700 or D3s, and if the ISO performance of this 36MP sensor only matches that of the D7000 then some will be disappointed.

current D3/D3S sensor pixels are 8.4 microns in size thus having great light gathering and ISO etc., but this new proposed sensor will have 4.8 micron size pixels. This much density will seriously affect the high ISO and low light performance.

There is a price to be paid if Nikon is chasing canon in high MP race...:shake:

But arguably what 35mm film can achieve when correctly used and correctly scanned

yes, but it's a lot different with film I think .

and there are loads of problems with huge MP counts on a relatively small sensor. some people in the rumours posts explains them .

I cannot believe that it would be 36mp, for a start files would be MASSIVE (at a guess around 20mb?). That resolution is just not needed for 95% of us. Maybe bring out a D800 and a D800x (like the D3 and D3x) which will then offer a camera for studio and one for everyday stuff where good iso performance is needed.

The farce of a camera that is the 1, a hefty social media faux pas and now putting themselves back in the megapixel race.

Did someone hit Nikon's self destruct button?

Waiting without baited breath.

2nd'd. Try as I may, I can't find anything my D700 can't do..

and the rest.

The 5DMKii RAW files are around 26mb for a 21.1MP sensor.

I suspect the D800 will be announced in November along with the 5D replacement (the Canon event in Hollywood).

Canon have claimed that there latest lenses can resolve 40+ megapixels havent they? if the same is new with Nikon's then 36 megapixels seems like it would provide real advanatges without having to print giant pics aswell as the extra cropping ability.

Personally I'd take that over high FPS or extreme ISO performance anyday.

Ergh.

D7000 ISO performance from this camera means it will have 36MP and better than D3 noise performance in print.

I wish people would actually learn a bit of signal theory before talking about sensors.

I think you may have the answer there :D D800s and D800x both different cameras for different jobs, the 36mp version having Iso performance of the D7000 would be nice, still a stop to a stop and a halve behind the D3/D700..... if the other version could match the D3s in iso performance and offer say a new auto focus system with a slight increase in mp that would offer a good alternative. The D4 imho opinion is going to be quite special, a little like the intro of the D3 was, with a new auto focus system and further jump in iso performance over the D3s and much more.

We are a year on from the D7000 so I don't think its unreasomabley to expect improved ISO performance even with the same pixel density.

Will inevitably get one once the price drops a little or maybe once they start to appear on the 2nd hand market, but in no real rush.

I wouldn't turn down 36 megapixels (have a pc that can deal with that already for processing), but I don't really do anything that requires that many. When I went to FF I could have easily gone the 5DmkII route, but as I thought at the time, other than cropping (which I can see an added value) I can't really think of when it would be of huge value to me. Obviously that just me personally, studio shooters, landscapes etc, definitely worth an upgrade.

To be honest i'd be more interested if they add a 100% viewfinder, dual card slots and a little more dynamic range. Also if the fps does drop, that may bug me a little.

It will have 100% viewfinder and dual card slots.

Interesting if true, but will reserve judgement until it's finally released. Even so, it's probably not a day one purchase for me unless the price is less than expected. Don't get me wrong, I can probably afford one on release date, but to me i'm not sure the added features to me are worth the price difference between selling my D700 and purchasing one, especially with the higher price it will have for the first few months until supply is sorted out.

If the rumours are correct, then i reckon I will get one in 9-12 months when hopefully body only will be hovering around or just above £2k, but we will have to see.

Also I hope they don't jsut go for dual format card slots, I want to be able to back up photo's as taken.
