Hi

I've got a Nikon D800 and have just decided to test with my Sigma 150mm 2.8 APO MACRO DG HSM EX and have noticed a few weird things and wondering if anyone knows what the problem is.

Lowest aperture I can set it to is 3.3 and autofocus in live view doesn't work?

Thanks

Remember it's a macro lens so maximum aperture will change noticeably with focusing distance. Is the max aperture still 3.3 if you focus on infinity first?
Lack of AF in liveview is probably down to Sigma's reverse engineering of Nikon's AF system not being compatible with newer cameras. It's worth contacting Sigma to see if there's a firmware upgrade for that lens.

I didn't even know you can update firmware for lens, have had a look, can't find a sigma support email address, any chance you know it?

Also focused on infinity and got 2.8 so I was wrong about that.

Thats completely normal. The nikon 105mm VR does exactly the same thing when you focus closely. At the closest focal distance on a macro lens, F2.8 would have an exceptionally shallow depth of field, which is mostly useless in macro work anyway as you'll often hover around 6.3-11 at that sort of range.

The effective aperture actually changes when you focus very close. Nikon reports this, Canon doesn't, perhaps to prevent this kind of confusion, but it's still changing. In either case, TTL metering takes care of it.

I have the OS version of the 150, does the same thing, as do all other macro lenses. As mentioned though, you never need 2.8 for close focus work, the DOF will be insanely narrow, even stopped down from that, at 1:1 especially.

Thanks guys, it's not the aperture which is problem now just live view

Just been reading an old mag and it mentioned a problem with live view AF on the 5300 and df. Said that there is a free fix, but didn't mention the sigma lenses that are affected

Might be the same trouble you are having

There is a mention of D5300 firmware updates on the Sigma returns page so I think you're right.

Brill thanks guys. I've emailed in to Sigma so see what happens, I'll report back
