Considering an upgrade from D610 to D800. The D800 has been around ages now so i it worth the investment or should I spend a little extra and go for a D800e or D810. My genre is landscape and family outdoor shots and portraits. Why the upgrade? not a lover of the D610 auto focus area and feel the pro controls would be much more user friendly, the eyecup/viewfinder alone drives me mad for long exposures on the D610. Also will my 2009 iMac with 2.66Ghz intel core 2 processor with 8gb of memory be up to the 36mp file sizes?

I’m in the same boat as you albeit with the D600, for me it’s D810 or stick with what I’ve got. The D810 is a much better camera than the D800.

FWIW I’ve replaced the eyecup on mine for the Nikon round one, much better.

As for your pc it depends on your patience. I wouldn’t be happy with that processer for 24meg files let alone 36meg files but if it’s working for you for 24meg files then another 50% isn’t going to cause a meltdown.

The D800 is still a great camera and available at a great price used, the D810 is better so if budget permits go for it but D800 will do all you need ... I don't do Mac so can't comment other than to say that all the initial concerns about 36mp files blowing up computers never really materialised. :)

I had a d600 and d800 and sold them both in the end.

The d800 is a better buy for £700+ than a d810 at £1250+ IMO. ( unless you actually need the 810 changes )

The d600 / d610 is just wrong with its stupid AF and any other Nikon FF is an upgrade.

Of course the elephant in the room is the D750 which is better in some areas than the D810! And can be had brand new for £950!

24 megs is still more than enough and the D750 excells well above the D600 in the focusing stakes.

I have both a D800 and a D750 and use each for different subjects.
IMO the D800 cannot be beaten by any other camera for landscape, cityscape, architecture (both exterior and interior) and nighttime photography.
However the D750 is the great all-rounder and a bargain for what a new one costs today.
If I had to choose between them then I would keep the D750.
Before buying the D750 I considered the D810 but, for me, the extra cost wasn't worth it.
The D750 shutter problem should also be taken into consideration before buying.
