Hey guys yesterday was the first time I went out with my D800 and used AF-C at a wildlife park. I quickly noticed how alot of my shots were really out of focus compared to my D300.

The D800 never seems to lock on at all and the focus jitters around all over the place, anyone else have this kind of issue?

Where you using one of the focus tracking modes? Like 3D? DOn't suppose it was giving you trouble on the left mostly?

i was thinking about this the other day. I use rear button focussing with the af-c thing and the focus motor is always chipping away, the clue is in the name i spose "constant". I guess it has to since your body is always moving a little bit, never noticed any real out of focus shots but its always in the back of my head that
a) your burning the af-c motor all the time and
b) maybe the shot is recorded in the instance in between focus re-jigging so it might not be as sharp as can be.

I might do some tests on a tripod to see if things are affected by it. Depends on what you call "really" out of focus, totally ballsed up or just a bit fuzzy?

Any focus point and it does it, even on a tripod shooting a static object it seems to never lock on.

If it happens with all your lenses, take it back to the retailer; if just with one lens, my suspicion would be with that lens.

Here's a quick vid of it on a tripod using a remote shutter aiming at a static object with the focus jumping around.

Maybe its the norm just never remember my D300 doing this.

the background, white blob top right, doesnt seem to move as much as the lens there. You sure you got it solid? It looks like the video camera is more steady than the lens.

Just put mine on a tripod and pointed it at something, once it locked on it didnt budge at all with af-c. Do all your lenses do this?

Actually i just tried it on a variety of targets, some it locks on to and others it judders about a little. Seems to depends on how much contrast there is in what im pointing at.

You don't get AF assist light in AFC of course. Maybe you just need to try in better light?
