D80 upgrade advice

Yes
So I currently use a D80 with the Standard 18-70mm kit lens. I've been using this for about a year now and it has served me well but I think it is time for an upgrade. Partly due to the fact that I think it may be dying (3rd or 4th hand now, does random things), but mainly as I'm not happy with the image quality (and the metering system on the D80 is driving me insane).

I haven't really kept up to date with camera releases for about 2 years so I don't really know what I should get next. I think my ideal camera would be a Canon 5D MK1 with a f2.8 zoom lens, but its well over my budget. Though I only have the one lens at the minute so I don't mind switching to Canon.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should go for? My main requirement is better image quality and lower noise at higher ISO. HD video would also be nice as I would use it, but it's not a high priority and every camera seems to have it these days anyway. Was looking at Nikon D5100 and D7000 but not sure if they would be a huge upgrade or not? Guess my budget is 600-700 maybe more if it's worth it.

Thanks!
Phil

low noise and high iso performance means D7000 for me if you want to stick with Nikon. It shoots HD video as well etc

i went from a d80 to a d7000 a couple of weeks ago, its a huge upgrade , paif about £700 from here

Thanks for the advice, sounds like the 7000 is the way to go.

The D300, even second hand, is probably still out of my price range when you add a lens. Would also like to avoid second hand.

One last though though.. If the 7000 is the newer D90, would I be missing out on much if I just went for the D90 and spent the extra money on a good lens?

D7000 uses newer sensor, faster burst, 100% viewfinder, more stronger body, more AF point, better iso performance.

D90 is still a good camera but if i looking for a camera now i might as well paid abit more for D7000 instead of a D90. if budget is really right then buy the D90.

think i will yeah. im leaning more towards getting a new d90 body now and spending money on better lenses in the future, like a fast prime and fisheye

i will vote for the d300 ,i just upgraded from a d80 and bought a s/h d300 with a md10 battery grip is had about 18000 shutter actuautions when i bought it and there isn't a mark on it, i paid £550 delivered for the lot so bargains are out there and the difference over the d80 is awesome ,i wouldn't worry about buying s/h if you can check sellers references or buy from a dealer

Check out mpbphotographic they come recommended and iirc they also take in PX...

May be worth dropping them a line an see what they come up with - or you could ask Stuart at DigitalDepot (TP member) he might be able to sort something out for you as well.. He done me a very good deal on a Nikon TC-20 E III - I know its not a body but he did give me a a good quote once for a Nikon D700 .....
