D80 function I'm not sure of;

Hoping someone can shed more light on this, I have been reading through the manual trying to understand all the different functions & capabilities of my new cam. One thing I'm struggling with is, when you look into the view-finder, and you put pressureo on the capture button, only slightly so the cam focused, you get the red squares (sorry I don't know technical name) - is this called metering, I could be wrong? but someone shed more light on these, what they are for, and what happens when you change them.

These are the focus points highlighting to show you which one (or ones) are active - i.e. this will be the area of the frame that the camera is focusing on.

Have a look here: http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d80/index.shtml - Use the pop out menu on the left to go to 'Focus' and have a look at the 'Tutorial Videos'. This should help.

As above, those are the focus points. You can move them around so the camera will focus on different things. It's kinda hard to explain, so either the tutorial linked above or the manula should be able to help you further.
