Hi,

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR and I'm thinking of the D80. But I'm stumped as to what lenses I should get. I def need something suitable for portraits but I'd also like something with a decent zoom. What would people suggest?

I'm working to a budget of c£650. Any advice - either in terms of lenses or bodies - is gratefully received.

Thanks,

Jim

How about this http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=71719

And for £650 all in (inc P & P) I will let you have the camera and a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which is also boxed and in mint condition. Have a look at reviews of this lens. It's a cracker. This is an excellent lens and the D200 is in mint condition as described.

Chris :)

Good deal there, take it :)

Only downside is you won't have much reach with a 17-50. If you want a lens that can do wide angle and telephoto then your only real choices are the Sigma 18-200mm and Nikon 18-200mm (the latter being better but more expensive).

I have a mint Nikon 18-200mm vr. I will only sell with the D200 as part of a package and that would be £750.00 all in & P & P. Tis a good copy.

I still think the Tamron just edges the 18-200 on IQ and is also obviously better in low light as it is a much fatsre lens.

Yeah the 18-200mm isn't without its flaws; it's quite slow, suffers from vignetting, CA, barrel-distortion at the wide end, and distorted bokeh.

But these problems don't impact IQ too much, and when you consider its versatility it's well worth the cash :)

Sorry :p

Basically the 18-200mm isn't flawless but it's certainly very good considering the zoom range (about 11x) and the price. For £750 with a D200 it's a steal; my D80 and 18-200mm cost me £900 new :(

i have a D80 and a Sigma 18-200mm great combination,

Wow, I dont get any of this ( well maybe just a little barrel distortion ) with my 18-200, should I send it back?

Hehe don't get me wrong it's mostly not that noticeable. Just me being picky. It is known for having odd bokeh though.

I take it this person is completely new to DSLR... so do you not think a D80 would be a better starting place for them as it does have some auto modes to fall back on.

That is what I used to do with my D50 ...if I could not get the pic I wanted I used to take it in auto and look at the settings and try again making slight changes.

I know the D200 has the P mode but would a fully automatic mode be better for a newbie.... just my thoughts guys.. dont shoot the messenger...

I think I used auto mode on my D80 for the first few photos I took but then started playing with P and A and never went back to auto. P should be fine for a beginner really, after all it's exposure that's the hardest part to grasp and P does that for you.

I have not used P mode so I could not comment on that.... just thought I would put another view across that all..

Hi all, thanks for the advice and the offers. I want to stick with something with an auto option to start with so I'll prob go for the D80 - and no offence, but I want to buy kit with a warranty.

I'm still unsure about the lenses however. I can get a D80 with a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS for c£690. Would this be a better lens option than a Nikon 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX and a Nikon 55-200mm F4-5.6G VR AF-S DX IF-ED?

Also, are there any online retailers that I should avoid? I'm not overly keen on buying stuff that has to be shipped in but it seems to be how everyone works.

Thanks again.

I am still getting used to my D80, and think that it is a great camera. It came with the 18-135 kit lens and I am looking at the 70-300 VR lens, however that is the only one I'm looking at.
Buy a D80, you will not regret it.
I also have the Nikon battery pack which I don't use and will sell it when I can start a thread in the for sale section.
