D750 - badly damaged - options/repairs?

Having taken the plunge and bought a D750 I was loving the improvements over my old D7100 until last night when I opened the car boot after a long drive back from holiday and loads of stuff fell out [it was packed to the top after a family camping trip] the most significant of which was my D750 - it had worked its way out of my rucksack on the journey/in the fall too so I was even more gutted. Damage appears to be to the folding screen - won't fold back in; the play button is jammed and the metal body has a severe ding near the left hand selector - breaking the button you push down to select shot mode. The screen still displays but the display reports F0 when any lens is tried.

Any opinions/thoughts on -

[1] Nikon versus say Fixation for quotes and/or repairs?

[2] If a Nikon is ever repairable once the metal body has been dented? Anyone had similar damage sorted?

[3] Likely repair times if I go Nikon [it's years since I used them and that was just a service]?

Luckily my home insurance company is normally excellent in covering accidental damage but I'm feeling quite sick about it all...

Cheers

I would go down the home insurance route for an replacement, the repair cost could be quite high :(

I think for such an expensive body they may want me to get a quote/confirmation its a write off first - although they have been very reasonable in the past - its the damage to the chassis of the camera that's most worrying...

The only way to get rid of the damage chassis i would think,is to replace the body, you may be able to get the top plate replacement, but if you the add in an new screen and the replacement buttons, and any internal problems,i just cant see it being cheap :(

I guess there will be an economic repair point and this one might just cross the gap into uneconomic

If your going down the home insurance route you could always make it un-repairable :exit:

I couldn't possibly comment............ ( can't type as I'm holding camera and a hammer! )

Really bad idea! Don't add to the damage, insurance assessors are not stupid and if they suspect any damage is deliberately inflicted you could end up getting nothing PLUS a fat black mark against you on the insurance database which will screw you crossways for your future insurance needs. The accident was honest, stay honest, it will benefit you bigtime.
(I have no connection with the insurance industry)

it must be the season for it, I slipped on a piece of (ice like) plastic at a venue last week with two D750's hanging off me, damaged both cameras (though they still work), broke a strobe, flash trigger and snapped the hood on my 14-24mm. Its a horrible feeling, especially when you take care of your kit as well as I do.

I would send it in to Nikon for a quote, usually the quotes come back fairly quickly.

Now that sound like a REALLY expensive fall, I would be devastated.

The d750 seems pretty durable, think the OP must have been pretty unlucky with the way the camera landed. I was devastated, now just more annoyed at the dimwits that run the venue, after I'd fallen they mentioned how slippy the surface was, but fine if your wearing golf spikes, which surprisingly myself and the bride and groom weren't.

Thanks all, it must have landed right on the top left corner at the back I think looking at the damage - it was horrible to suddenly realise my camera was bouncing on the drive! I think I'll go for the Nikon route for a quote - my excess is £250 but even if it is repairable I guess it'll be more than that. Got my SD cards out and still have my holiday photos which is one bright point!

Off to Nikon it is - promised a quote by about the 4th September which doesn't sound too bad. Very well wrapped up and used their free return service. I'll update on times/prices in case it helps others, cheers

By way of update - was told quote 4th then 3rd September but still heard nothing - I guess Nikon are a bit busy at the moment - went out with my back up body last weekend and really missed the D750 frame rate, cropability and buffer!

They're a nightmare at the moment still, mines 3 weeks and counting. Last time was 4 weeks.

Ouch - I was quite hopeful when they said about a week for the quote! I'll not plan any special photographic trips for a while then...

I would go down the house insurance route, if the camera's that new I wouldn't want a repaired version that I'd always be questioning if it's been fixed right, if anything else has been damaged and not picked up on etc etc.

As for making the damage worse, don't listen to those folk. Whilst I'm sure it was all in jest it is a bug bear of mine, and as Twist says no wonder rates keep going up.

And insurance assessors/loss adjusters never read public photo forums....right?

I'm happy for mine to read this one! I called them to tell them of the accident and they were good enough to not even open a claim file until we get a Nikon quote [so if I decided not to use them it wouldn't register a claim]. The only embarrassing thing is that I haven't claimed for any accidental damage for about 20 years and then I've had two camera related claims in a year :( must be getting old...

sell it on Ebay, (fully described of course), and buy another

Will consider that Bill once I know whether it is a write off or not - as it stands it is unusable sadly! Peter

even expensive cameras now seem to be in the "throw away" market if there is a slight problem

It's the damage to the metal chassis I'm worried about - I guess by the time you've completely stripped a camera to rebuild it on a new body it becomes technically difficult/uneconomic - which is why I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience?

Just get a quote from Nikon then and go from there. Yes I can appreciate what you're saying about uncertainty etc, but accidents happen (and the was a bit of a s***ty time at the end of your holiday) and this is what we have insurance for.

Do you have an excess on your insurance ? Will this put your premium up ? - I would look at these V what it's going to cost me to get the camera repaired / replaced another way and then decide the best way forward...

Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks both, it shows an error with a lens connected, the selector dial wont work as the release button is smashed into the body [and there's metal exposed in the same area] the play button is jammed in, the screen has folded out and wont fold back in but will show info... is what I can remember! My excess is £250 but looking on the bright side better that than losing a £1050 camera altogether - just got to be patient and wait for Nikon now.

Update as promised - Nikon's estimate was 12 days later than the initial date suggested and the repair cost is some £620 - thanks goodness for decent contents insurance - downside is it'll take some time (a) to get it back and (b) to learn to trust the camera is OK I guess...

It will comeback like a new camera and every bit as reliable as if you bought a new one.

I sent my D3 in for estimated repair and the go ahead if it was under £400 - it needed repainting the body, new rubber grips all round, new hot shoe because that had corroded from seawater over the years....then a full service and clean. I sent it last Wedsneday, it is on it's way back to me - it would have been sent out on Monday if I hadn't cocked up the payment paperwork and had to phone for payment today, when I got home and found thei remail...it is arriving tomorrow. Literally, within a week of sending it in. Total cost £213.00, including the courier.

Thanks - that gives me hope that the repair might be quite quick - yes I hope its just as good as it was before it's been difficult going back to an inferior spare body!

And still waiting! Showing "parts required on their way soon" or something been like that for over a week - that is over five weeks so far! Not impressed...
