D750, 7000 plus others bearing a red label...

My D7000 and my D750 have the word 'FORMAT' written in red in two separate places; one next to the 'delete' button and one next to the 'metering' button. Anyone know why? I thought it may be a button combination shortcut but it appears not.
 
Explanation: These two buttons are a shortcut to format a memory card without wandering through menus:

  • Press and hold both buttons with the red label „FORMAT“ on the back and on the top for about two seconds.
  • On the LCD display you will see „For“ and a flashing symbol that indicates which memory card will be formatted. The default is the one in slot 1 and with the main command dial at the back you can change to slot 2.
  • Another press on both buttons will then format the memory card – and irrevocably delete all pictures on them.
    Any other operation will cancel the formatting.
Tips: You should format all memory cards before first usage and also occasionally after transferring your pictures to your computer (and making a backup!) to take precautions against write errors on the card.

Professionals do this regularly to be on the safe side.
 
Thanks for that. I did try holding them both down but obviously didn't do it for long enough...trying it...oh yes, works. Cheers
 
Another tip on this. When you hold down the format buttons for the first press the top lcd will indicate which of the memory cards it's going to wipe. If you wish to change it, twiddle the rear wheel before you do the confirmation second press.

Why does no one just pick up their manual any more? Seriously... why post a question like this to a forum. Even if you lost our manual, they're freely available on the nikon website.

Because it does no harm to ask, it hasn't wasted anyone's time, except possibly yours, and I was idly wondering and not looking for a fact-finding tour through the enormously thick manual. Sometimes simple questions like this can lead to related discussions such as the finality of SD card formatting in camera -- can images be recovered by other people? -- for example.

In truth the answer to everything ever asked on this and any other forum can be answered by reading a manual, a book, or these days by Googling, whether it be what a simple icon on a camera is for or something like 'can people blind from birth know what the colour yellow is?' However if we all did this there would be no discussion and no need for forums like this one.

It obviously interested you enough for you to post a reply, no matter how vacuous.
 
What is your problem mate? I posted a question -- an innocent question -- and you have done nothing but take some sort of poncy, moral highground in a supercilious and downright rude manner. It is a shame people like you ever learned to read and write let alone be allowed access to a computer where you can send your troll messages knowing that you cannot be found by people like me. I'm glad I posted the question now as your sound advice has pointed me in the direction of the index in my manual wherein I can see that the answer to said question is apparent on page 375. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm so bloody grateful.

Apart from asking a question & usually just getting a prompt & helpful reply (which can sometimes be quicker than RTFM :confused: ) other tips on the subject eg Graham (post #4) can also add useful info. for the likes of myself who don't know everything. ;)

It is a `forum` after all. :cool:
