Hi all, I've just received my d7200 and took some nice pictures of my daughter in raw file, I want to edit the pictures but Lightroom 5.7.1 don't support the file so I can't edit it and my laptop won't read the file so I'm stuck!!!! Any help will be so appreciated,

Many thanks Lee

My preference is Adobe elements for editing but that is personal choice. Never had any problems with RAW files

that lightroom version only supports
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7

do you have windows 8-8.1 or 10, that could be your problem

have a go at adobe elements free trial download

Adobe are sods like that but you can use the software that came with the camera (or download it from Nikon), it isn't as nifty as LR but still works perfectly fine.

Cheers for that but I didn't get a cd with mine but I'll have a look but once again thanks for your reply.

Lightroom 5 does not support D7200 raw files.
You can continue to use LR5 and convert nefs to dng or tiff, or you can upgrade LR5 to LR6 which does support D7200 raw.

Adobe do not make it easy to find the 5 to 6 upgrade, follow these instructions if you want to go that way: (costs about £65 IIRC)

Ok just looking up on the net and seen this creative cloud photography plan, it's about £8 a month, your suppost to get photoshop cc and Lightroom cc which I've read supports d7200 but was wondering if anyone has it and is it full versions of both or some slimmed down version.

I have the CC package and as far as I can tell it's the full programs.

I took out the CC subscription because Nikons own free software crashed every time I tried to edit a raw...

If you subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud, you do not own the software that you download and if you fail to make a monthly payment, the software is automatically de-activated. As far as I know, Lightroom 6 and Photoshop CS6 were the last versions that you could purchase outright on a DVD.

I use version 5 of both, and convert all of my Nikon and Canon and Fujifilm RAW files to DNG format using Adobe DNG Converter, before I import them into Lightroom. I prefer the DNG format to the NEF because the Lightroom edits are imbedded into the RAW file - there is no XMP sidecar file. DNG files are also slightly smaller than NEF or CR2 files. I have made very large prints (24x36") from both file types converted to Tiff, from the same original NEF file and there is no visible difference.

Nikon's ViewNX software as packaged with some cameras (D7000, D5100 and others) was faulty and crashed. The version that is available as a download from the Nikon website now works well, as does Capture NX-D, but neither are as easy to use as Lightroom once you know your way around Lightroom. Lightroom and Photoshop (CS or Elements) go hand-in-hand. Neither can replace the other.

Google have made their Nik Effects Pro plugin suite for Photoshop and Lightroom available as a free download. Once learned, they are excellent and a great time saver.

As you already have LR5 you can buy the upgrade version of LR6 off the Adobe website. I think it was £59 when I went from LR4 to LR6. CC is good if you have a use for all of the programs. I find just upgrading LR every couple of years the best for me, I'm hoping my next one will be LR8 if they carry on with the 12-18 month upgrade cycles. Roughly £30 a year for buying the software this way is excellent value. The improvements between versions don't ever seem to be big enough to tempt me to upgrade every time. I can foresee a time when they only go with CC and have no standalone version.
