Looking at venturing into FF so want to ask what you would choose, the D700 which is still considered as one of Nikons best ever cameras according to reviews, or should I stick with a DX body like the D7100 for my style of shooting which is 99% aircraft shooting so dont need anything thats a great low light performer like the D700???

My head is beggining to hurt trying to work out which is best for me without spending a fortune.

What about a 7200?

Is the D7200 worth the extra over the D7100 for better ISO which I don't really need, maybe if I was shooting in twilight or near dark, but I shoot mainly into the sky so wouldn't optimise the better ISO range of a D7200........... is the buffer larger on the 7200?

Buffer is much better on the D7200 but there is something special about the D700, build, ease of use, lovely image colours.

I went for the D7200 mostly for the larger buffer alone, a smidge better ISO was a bonus

FX v DX here, the DX gives you that crop factor making your lenses seem 1.5x longer, and also puts 24mp on the plane rather than 12mp

For what you're shooting it'd be a no brainer for me to go DX and stretch that bit extra for a D7200 too :)

I had a d700, d7000, d300, d5500, d90 and d600.

I was surprised that the d600 actually feels like a quality solid camera and nicer somehow than the 7000 series cameras.

I would recommend a d600 / d610 over the d700 but perhaps the d7200 would be much better for aircraft photography I think.

I had the D7100 - one of the things I hated was the small buffer - I went for the extreme option instead - D500 and reap the benefit of improved AF.

D7200 was much better bufferwise.

Handling of D7*00 series is very good, but for air shows get the D7200 - things were so bad with the D7100 I resorted to picking up my K-3, yes the AF lag was noticeable but once you lock on the shutter kept going and going (and with the Pentax you could keep shooting as the buffer was clearing although you could feel the frame rate slowing, but not stopping).

Probably a mistake...............but I did opt for a very low mileage D700 as I really do want to see if they really are one of Nikons best ever cameras, if it goes pear shaped I wont have any bother moving it on

It's a very capable camera used in the past by many Pro togs, sure there are later cameras with better AF and bells & whistles but it is one of Nikon's benchmark cameras.

Good choice on the D700! It's a brilliant camera. Even though I also have a D750 I won't be giving up my D700. There's just something about its files.

Only had it 2 hours and can say, its a special bit of kit...........the camera just oozes quality over the D7XXX range, now have to wait for my CF card to come from the shop, or probably Tels will get here sooner lol then I can check the IQ from that legendary sensor in these things, but as far as holding it and fondling it, it really is a thing of beauty.

Have you decided to sell it?

Assuming you're taking aircraft actually flying I'd have thought DX would have been better, especially as the D700 is 'only' 12mp so doesn't allow too much cropping. However, you seem to be happy with the D700 so sounds like it's right for you.
