Thinking of buying a D700.

I usually take my D80 out and about with me alot and I use the Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR Lens which I think for size and function is great as a 'one lens' system.

I have been reading the spec sheet of the D700 and came across the DX crop mode. Does this mean the 18-200m will work as normal with the D700 or will it give horrible vignetting at the edges etc?

Any one used a D700 with this lens.

All advice greatly welcome.

I'm somewhat embarrased to admit I've got a 18-200 VR at the moment... I could offend my D700 with it to try out if you'd like :)

Be interesting to see the quality of the 5mp cropped mode.

It will work using only the middle of the sensor - you will get a 5 mp image.
Yes, you get a smaller, but perfectly good image. I have used the Nikon 18-55mm Dx standard lens from my D40x on my D700, no problems. The D700 will auto-detect the Dx lens and produce the smaller image.

I would really be grateful for some samples if you don't mind offending your camera!

The first shot is the 18-55 Dx lens on a D40x. The second is on a D700 FX.

The images are the same area, except that the pixel resolutions are different. The D40x has 3872x2592, and the D700 with a Dx lens has 2784x1848.
