I, just set up d7000 and when I switch it off the top L C D does not clear, the amount of space left on the cards for pictures still shows up, is this normal?

Yep. Normal on all Nikon LCD's. I think the idea is that you won't take the camera out with either no memory card or a full one.

Yes it is, it's a Nikon thing. I believe all the models with a top screen do the same, i know my D90 does.
