Hi all , hope this is right section but using phone and cant find a section for help so apoligies if in wrong section.

Recently got a d7000 and when using shutter or apature priority the only focus point that lights up in viewfinder is the centre one regardless of wether im using single or multiple focus points.

It shows correctly on the lcd screen but not in viewfinder.

They will only show up in viewfinder if i hold in the centre button on the side of camera.

Hope that makes since and any help id be greatful for.

I know when changing the position of the single point focus position. It will change in the viewfinder but the LCD will always show it in the centre.

I can see the single point move on LCD screen but the only that ever works in viewfinder is the centre point.

I'm not familiar with the D7000's controls but does it have a focus point lock, that might be on?

With the D300 (and I think my D90 previously) the focus point could be moved in live view (as seen on the LCD screen) even when the focus lock is on.

Cheers , yeah it does have the lock and defo of.

Been through the manuel and am stumped. Other focus points show up in auto mode but nothing in other modes.

I think it only shows 1 point through the viewfinder, the focus point's can then be picked out by using the pad at the back and it will show the focus point selected in the viewfinder dependent on what setting you have set, only in auto/3d mode will it pick out a load of points itself (from what I can tell).

Are you expecting it to show all 9 center points in the viewfinder when you select it to use those 9?

thanks ivan , maybe they don't show them all through the viewfinder , couldn't remember if my d90 did or not .

i contacted a friend who checked his Nikon ( not sure what model ) he says even in shutter priority mode all the small boxes show up and then they light up when focusing like it does in auto mode .

as i say im new to d7000 so maybe on this model it only ever shows the centre point through the viewfinder unless your in auto.

I don't understand what you are saying. There is only ever one focus point highlighted in the viewfinder in all MODES M,A,S,P UNLESS you set the focus to auto then several little red squares me light up together in the viewfinder as the focus locks on.If the MODE used is AUTO that means the camera focus system is also in auto so it will also show several little red squares lighting up as the focus locks on. I don't know what you mean by you can see the focus points on the LCD but not in the viewfinder? Are you talking about when you press the Focus Selection Mode button at the bottom left of the camera and then rotate the command dial to select how many points you want active. If so the reason you can see all the points 1-39 is that it is showing you which points will be active in (C)continues or (A)predictive, (S) will only show one on the LCD because it is only that point that will be used.ALL the(active) focus points do not show up in viewfinder as it would not aid composition.I hope this helps.

You have multiple options, single point will only light up 1 point and you can choose which one.

Then you have 3d tracking which will light up the ones that are being tracked.

I've never tried full auto, but presume it will work the same as 3d.

But 3D tracking still only lights ONE point up it just moves around in the view finder. I do not understand what the OP is saying when they say "all the small boxes SHOW UP and then they light up when focusing like it does in auto mode" ?.

3d tracking lights up multiple, but it might be 1 point at a time in quick succession to show which points are being used.

The only time when more than 1 focus point show up is when you set it to auto focus mode, this means the camera select the focus point for you. Apart from that it will only show 1 single focus point on the view finder ..........

Whats the problem anyway?
