can you tell me how to check the actuations on a d700 ??

Isn't it the same way as other DSLRs? If so, I usually take a pic, upload it on Flickr and go to the exif data, and somewhere halfway the data list, there is the shutter count. Or if you are a Mac user, you open the latest pic you take using Preview - Tools - Show Inspector - More Info (2nd tab) - Nikon - there is also the shutter count info.
 
That's much better ^^

Make sure it's not a processed file though, or it confuses it, a straight RAW seems to work best, just tried it. My D800E count = 13011 - using a RAW from this evening.
