New to the forum and wanna ask a few questions to get an idea of what to do

The Nikon D700 -

Is it a good camera for portraits? My pro tog friend has said it is rubbish for portraiture and anything that requires detail. I have researched the camera and it seems to get glowing reviews for iso etc. what are your views on this?

I can get one cheapish but have been told not to buy an out of date body

My friend is a wedding photographer and a very good one and only use the D700.
he can only praise is D700 and after a try myself with the right lenses i find it Amazing.
it is widely used by wedding photographer and the files are not yo big to process after.
I want one:)
 
But the detail is poor beyond A4 as the megapixel is so low

No offence, but your friend hasn't a clue, and you say he's a pro? Hmmm

The D700 was, and still is, an excellent full frame camera.

Yes very good up to A4, after that you loose detail.It all depend what are you going to shoot and print.
I get stunning result up to A4 easily and A3 in B&W with the right processing.
 
I've printed larger than A4 with D90 images. They looked fine. The D700 is better than the D90 for image quality.
 
18x12" prints from the D3 no problem at all. In Photoshop at 240 pixels per inch the files come out at 17.7"x11.8" straight from the camera, so you could comfortably go bigger if it's a clean shot.

It's pretty safe to assume that the bigger the print the further away people will stand to view it, so it all balances itself out to a certain extent.

Hmmm, interesting comment.

Could you back it up with some examples or quantify it in some way please?
 
I seldom weigh in on these camera debates, but seriously, if you can get a D700 in good shape for a fair price, go for it. They are excellent performers, and 12x18's are easily achieved and larger, too. A very good friend of mine shoots a D700 and has amazing results. You don't have to believe me...all you have to do is go to Flickr and search for a D700 group and see what people are achieving. Good glass helps...as it does with every camera.
 
Your friend is talking out of their backside. The D700 is an excellent camera :)

Correctomundo. Still using mine. No plans to change. It is still a top performer. Can be had for very good prices right now.

Highly recommended.

the point being missed is that larger prints are viewed from further away -I've printed shots from a canon 20D (which only has 8mp - 4 less than the D700) to A0 and they looked fine on the wall.

Obviously if you go pixel peeping with a maginifying glass there is less detail than there'd be with higher MP , but to any reasonable person that is irrelevant
 
I'm suspicious that this maybe a troll post as well but in the spirit of the forum, given that the D700 has 4,256 pixels along the long edge, then even as high as 300 dpi you're nearly at A3 sized prints. That's with no up-scaling or any allowance for viewing distance. I'd happily go to A1 or even further depending on other factors.

I have sold prints at 40 inches by 30 inches from the D700. IIRC the gadget show printed a vertical banner about 30 feet high from a D700 once.

It is an excellent camera.
 
If not for those posts though we'd be rattling on here like chumps about the D700
