Now I have had my D700 for well over a year now and am sure I have only noticed this recently (knowing me its probably always been there and I am just worrying over nothing!)

Anyhow - when looking through the viewfinder I notice a really bad speckly vignette around the two top corners and then along the top (so in a horizontal position) I will be honest, the sensor has never actually been cleaned - there are a few spots on it but as I dont dare do it myself (very accident prone so it will obviously go wrong!) I am going to have to take it somewhere to get done. At first I thought it must just be a grubby sensor but surely not the same size etc in both corners and then all along the top? It does show up in photos although not half as bad as I can notice it looking through the viewfinder.

Have swapped lenses about and still the same so not that.. most noticeable looking at pale blue (ie sky)

So is there anyone who could look through their d700 and tell me if you see anything similar to what I am describing? Or maybe you already know what I mean?

TIA

That will be the focussing screen. you don't see the sensor through the viewfinder.

just use a puffer.

"It does show up in photos although not half as bad as I can notice it looking through the viewfinder."

How odd. If you can see something through the viewfinder and it's on the focus screen, mirror or on / in the viewfinder itself it wont show up on pictures.

I have to ask, are you sure that what you see through the viewfinder matches what is on the pictures?

pretty positive yes. Am going to do some more inspecting of what I see against the actual photos in a bit when children are in bed but quite definate its the same. Unless maybe its just a coincidence..?

I am also confused that if it is dirt why it looks exactly the same in both corners and along the top?

both are dirty if not cleaned for a year take it to a local shop that does cleaning.

I would be hugely surprised if the same things affects viewfinder and images, because unless its on the lens, its impossible. The viewing path is as follows...

Your view through VF =Viewfinder > focus screen >Mirror > lens

Image view on sensor to take picture = Sensor > lens

See my point?

Yep, when you press the shutter button the whole mirror assembly swings out of the way giving a clear path from the lens to the sensor.

It's why cameras have a "mirror lock up" function. It locks the mirror assembly up so there is no vibration as the shutter works.

You don't see what is on the sensor through the viewfinder and when you press the shutter they are two different light paths as Yv says.

If there is grot on both then it is either that all surfaces are dirty (screen/mirror/sensor) or it is on one common surface.

Do you use one lens?

you said
"I will be honest, the sensor has never actually been cleaned - there are a few spots on it "

well, im using a D700 too, this machine cleans the sensor itself if you set it right, then its automatically done every time you turn on and off the machine... or you can go into the menu to clean it anytime you want.

try it, and then see if its still a problem.

and also check the lens and give it a good and careful clean if needed

Thanks all - will put a few pics on in the morn as on husbands laptop at min.

Ok few of the q's..

Lens - I swap between a 24-70 and 70-200. Have others but rarely use so not really noticed with those.

Camera cleaning - have set to clean everytime the camera turns on and has been set like that since I bought it but it does need a proper clean as always the same dust spots on each photo (as in the general spots you would get)

Have given both lenses a good clean although do that quite often anyhow.

Will add a couple of photos tomorrow
Thanks
