D700 USB driver for Windows 7 U 64.

Ok, So I am pulling my hair out here. The problem is as follows.

I have just upgraded to windows 7 against my usual gut instinct of waiting for SP1. Now, when it comes to plugging in my D700, it says that no drivers were found or installed for the camera. I initially thought it was windows being buggy and so I proceeded to look online for a solution. Nothing. I found the "driver" cd that came with it and tried a manual driver update via device manager from this source. Nothing. I tried downloading the latest version of Nikon transfer and fully updated Capture NX2. Nothing. I then tried letting windows search the windows update database for specific updates regarding this issue/camera/bug/what ever. Nothing.

So I am getting rather frustrated, and I would very very very very much appreciate any help people can offer. Personally, I'm not a fan of card readers, so please do not suggest this unless it is absolutely the final option.

(Was on Vista U 64 before.... No issues what so ever... In fact I'm half tempted to downgrade to it untill 7 sorts itself out.)
 
Not sure if this will help at all, but possibly worth a try; have you tried changing to/from MTP/PTP to/from Mass Storage under USB in the Setup Menu?
 
Ummm I dont know how much this would help but can you not install all of your NIKON software into Win7? When I upgraded, I used mine and it instally worked, not knowing if it would work for Win7.

Do you just want Windows to pick up the Camera as an external memory card?
 
looks like you're completely opposite to my situation, i had bought a cheap card reader for my xp machine and since upgrading to windows 7 64 bit it never seemed to work so i might have to get a new one, now i just use the usb cable.

how come your not a fan of card readers?

I have installed all the software (Nikon transfer, capture NX2, etc) onto windows 7, as mentioned in the OP.

Yes, I want windows to recognise it as a mass storage device. XP Pro and Vista U 64 both worked before I upgraded to win 7 two days ago.

strange...when I connect my d700, win7 finds it straight away and there is no problem with it...do you have internet access on the PC you try to connect d700 ? it should find the driver it self ...

If you plug in another USB device into the same port on your PC does windows find that ok. I am wondering if the USB Mass drivers for Windows are not installed.

Open up Device Manager to see if you have any Explanation Marks against the USB Section
 
What Firmware in the 700? I seem to remember my Uncle having a similar problem solved by an update??

Yep, connected to the net, and let windows search online for a driver/solution. Returns with nothing.

Yep, tried both my USB pens (which I had not plugged in since installing 7) and they both worked instantly. This would suggest Mass Storage drivers are installed...

When the camera is plugged in and turned on, under the "Other Devices" tab in Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to "NIKON DSC D700". Odd, as it resolves that hardware it is, it just doesn't know how to use it. Driver status is Code 28, drivers for device not installed.

Also, I just tried searching the Win 7 install dvd for drivers, and it found nothing.

...Vista is looking more and more tempting :/
 
try this
but make sure you have AV running ;) as you never know what can be hidden :)
 
Thanks for the link bastic, as it turns out, it's an exe for a driver detection piece of software... which invariably will turn out to be a load of **** :)
 
ugh, I hate those software packages.

I've tried doing that, pointing it at A) the D700 driver cd, B) the win 7 install disk and C) the internet. Nothing becomes of it.

Yup, also tried uninstalling and reconnecting. Straight away get the same message. No driver was installed for device.

I am currently reinstalling Win 7 from fresh to see if it could have just been a weird error at install.
 
If this doesn't work, I know this is a very tall favour to ask, but would it be possible for someone to narrow down what driver it is that windows is meant to use for the D700 and email me a copy of it? (For win 7 U 64, obviously)

I'd be very much obliged.

EDIT: Reinstall hasn't worked. Just out of interest, is anyone else using an/the "N" version of win 7/win 7 U 64?

Haha :D No. N versions are ones that do not come with WMP. Check out wiki for a full explanation.

Not to worry now anyway as I've gone back to vista. Low and behold, the D700 was instantly recognised and working on vista. No idea what was up with Win 7, but hey.
