Yes
my D700 is on about 80,000 acctuations, its extremeley well looked after by myself from new [all my stuff is imaculate and stored in camera bags].

last week the shutter and mirror packed in it had only came back from nikon about 6 weeks ago and i had told them i suspected the shutter wasnt correct.

nikon where a nightmare to deal with sending it back with dirty sensor/mirror, poorly packed in a small box with a courier who lost it.

the warranty runs out in a week,i would suggest that as most camera warrantys are not transferable its a bit of a gamble buying secound hand expensive cameras.
especially as they are so strict about honouring the warranty.

As the shutter life figure is a "mean" it could just as easily lived for years.

All it means is that some will fail well before, some near to, some just after and some well after, if ever, in the cameras life.

You were unlucky, but as you sa,y it is always buyer beware.

its the same camera and yes i did consider canon for a very short while, mainley because of the way i was treated.

ive had the camera from new one of the first.

its supposed to be good for at least 150,000 i wonder if nikon maybe damaged it,as i have never dropped or been rough with any of my camera gear.

my main point is the warranty, without it the repair would be the same price as the camera.

funny i dont worry about my old film nikons shutters/mirrors ever this is the first nikon gear ive had go wrong :)

Surely this isn't true for a D700? It'll be a few hundred at most surely, not £1700! Sorry to hear it's packed in, hope you get it sorted soon

Whoa !! Thinking of getting another D700. Deffo gonna be new now. My existing one I bought with 13,000 clicks. Now up to 65,000 since February.
Fingers firmly crossed now.

Shutters can just go anytime, my mates D3 went at around 100000

Last I heard..shutters are NOT covered by warranty.. so eeerm..

Anything Mechanical will eventually fail.
no matter what it is, if it interacts with another part it will go at some point.
Any component will have been tested to destruction as part of the R&D phase, they will have worked out that part X will fail at 'approximately xxxxxxx actuations/ movements.

Then you get one that goes for XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX actuations, and one that goes bang after XX.

If it is for personal use then chances are it will last longer, as a working pro however you may put your shutter through hell!

analogy could be grandad with his 'insert old car here', reliable car that son, lasted me for 30 years. Yes gramps, but you did 200 miles per year. now try 20,000 miles per year

Shutters not covered by warranty? Surely it is one of the major components most likely to fail...a bit like a car warranty not covering the engine?

As I said before it is not "good for" 150,000 that is the mean. It can fail at any point before or after.

Chris

camera isnt worth full price its S/H
i doubt very much its a few hundred though didnt someone mention £1000 once?

lets hope its just mine, my point is warranty isnt transferable and things can go wrong.

i am very lucky its gone now and not in 2 weeks when i would be out.

when they put a new shutter in i will feel relived its gone to fixation not nikon uk

£1,000 for a shutter? I'm sure I read a D300 shutter was replaced for about £140 on an American website.

are you sure they are even allowed to state mean values like this, after all this means that they are expecting 50% of their units not to satisfy this figure. Wouldn't this figure be stated so that at least 95% of the units satisfy the figure, this means that they can confidently state 150000. Otherwise it would be false advertising for half the people who buy one!

A grand for a shutter? I'd beat a Nikon rep to death with my broken shutter if they even thought about charging me that much! If I remember right, I thought to replace it on a high-end Canon cost something like £250, £300?

That sounds more like it! So it'll probably be a bit more as the camera is more expensive, but that sort of ball park

Mirror box went on my D2x after 30K or so. A bit miffed and all that but it's one of those things - I bough S/H so went with the repair and it came in at under £200 for the mirror box (entire unit) and labour, with an additional £120 for removing and replacing (with new) rubber seals, one of the perils of buying a gripped, prop body. Can't see a shutter on a D700 being that much more than £250 - check fixation if you need quick turnaround. Took 6 days from sending it out to receiving it back.

Sorry to hear about your problems mate, hope you get it fixed.

I recently bought my Canon 50D from Currys, managed to get a price match on the best price I could find. I also got the “Whatever happens” extended warranty for £150 for 5 years of cover.

I’ve had this cover on all sorts of products & never had any problems getting the item changed, usually on the spot!

Mick

i wish/hope you where right for the future

they gave me a £550 bill for a few minor items under the warranty before, which they tried to squeeze out of me

which included £22 for the grip rubber

it is at fixation and it will be at least 2 weeks

Getting a bit hacked off with Nikon cameras myself.

The first shutter went on my D2X at 76k actuations, repair cost £330.

The second shutter went 14 months later at approx 80k actuations, repair cost £395.

Both times repaired by Fixation and included a full service, P&P & VAT.

Just sent my D3 to NPS, guess why.....? You got it, shutter malfunction! It faired better than the D2X with almost 126k actuations but 6 months out of warranty I'm expecting another whopping bill in the region of £300-£400 :'(

Awful timing too, with 4 weddings this weekend and no D3.

Chris.

Holy Cr@p! Just seen my estimate from Nikon Professional Services...... £582.27!!!!

I'll be giving Fixation & ACS a call in the morning!!

There's not a decent enough sample here for high statistical confidence, but hopefully you'll find this somewhat reassuring.

80,000 clicks is a hell of alot though. How long have you had the camera?

That's nothing - that's like 80 jobs for a wedding or studio portrait photographer.
You easily can rack-up 80k actuations in well under three months during silly season...

Ok, just to clarify, Nikon have told me I need a new Base Plate Unit as well as a new Shutter Unit.

Labour Billable £125.21
1F998-462 SHUTTER UNIT £195.98
1F998-517 I BASE PLATE UNIT £117.32
1F998-601 BOTTOM COVER RUBBER £8.47
1F998-602 GRIP RUBBER £26.66
1F998-603 CONNECTOR SIDE RUBBER £16.85

Estimate Total £495.55
Tax Amount £86.72
Total £582.27 inc VAT

Fixation gave me an estimate over the phone for D3 shutter replacement £513.58 (inc VAT) but does not include a new Base Plate Unit.

Still horribly expensive but I hope that dispels all talk of a D700 replacement shutter costing £1000+.

NPS guarantee a 5 working day turnaround or free loan of camera until it is returned.

Look at the post above.

That's for a more expensive D3 shutter.

So this bit 'my main point is the warranty, without it the repair would be the same price as the camera' is simply repeating scaremongering without the actual facts.

But everyone knows a shutter will eventualy fail... if your warranty is for 3 yrs theres a chance your shutter will die in that period depending on what you shoot.. Plus shutter count is only a guide.. could be a 100 thousand out either way :)

Dont write it in stone.. its just a memory I ahve from somewhere that shutters are not covered..

My mate got his D3 shutter under warranty.

Any update on this?

My D3 just went in for a service and I was pretty shocked that it needs a new base plate unit. Especially because at the moment nobody can tell me for sure what a base plate unit is (waiting for techs to come in in the morning).

Total strip down and rebuild costing £500......

I'd beat a Nikon rep to death with my broken shutter if they even thought about charging me that much!

It would need a high mean rating I imagine to actually kill a rep by beating him with the shutter..

Now a 500 F4 should do it first time:)

Seems to be a standard part Nikon like to replace - D200 went in for the "banding" fix, and somehow that ended up needing a new baseplate :shake:

I sent a further D200 for dead batteries (now well known as "dead battery syndrome") - Nikon denied the fault, but also tried to charge me £££ to replace the baseplate. I declined on that. Luckily Nikon fixed that issue later with firmware.
