Yes
I am thinking about upgrading from the d5000 to the d700. now its quite a hefty chunk of money but hopefully the results would be worth it.

my question is will the d700 soon be replaced with a new model from nikon as its been around for a few years? does anyone know of anything?

Lee

Been thinking similar thing myself, there are a few articles around that say next FX model will be the Nikon D800, released in 2011. Don't think there's an official release date as yet.

Only rumors though remember:

Nikon D800 likely spec and features:

- 24-megapixel sensor

- EXPEED 2 image processing engine

- Enhanced Live View with full time AF

- 1080p video

- Full-time AF in video mode

- 2,016 RGB metering sensor

- 95% field of view videwfinder

- Full HD (1080p) video

- Sensitivity expandable to ISO 102, 400

- 8fps contiuous shooting

I think the D700 will be replaced very soon so I'm waiting to upgrade to the newer model
Dave

again, only rumours;

"This dpreview poster claims that the D800 will have a sensor carriage that can be removed by an authorized dealer. The rest of the specs: 16.4MP FX and 12MP B&W sensors, 3.3″ LCD screen with a built in collapsible hood, new MB-D10i battery grip, 1/16000sec, full HD video at 120fps. This rumor could be influenced by the recent interchangeable sensor patents filed by Nikon. From patent application 2010-258657 :

“To provide an imaging device that has no restrictions on designing, can make an accurate alignment of a light-receiving surface of an imaging element, and has a removable imaging unit.”

Yes - the D700 will be replaced by the d800 at some point (probably this year), but it won't make the d700 any less of a camera then it is now

The D700 is being listed as discontinued or out of stock with no incoming stock by various retailers world wide according to Nikon rumours. This seems to indicate at least an announcement soon (focus?) to me at least.

Yeah, there are always folks waiting waiting waiting... people were waiting last summer for a D800. f course it will be better, but the D700 is a lovely camera... but remember you also need to feed it bigger, better, heavier and more expensive glass.

well im currently running a d5000 with a 70-200 vrII 2.8 but the rest of my lenses are just basic dx ones 18-55 55-200 and 35 1.8 so i think the smart move for me would be the 24-70 2.8 then maybe see what im hearing about the d800 then?

would you agree?

thanks for the help so far guys

Have heard of low stocks, cashback deals, plus the D700 has dropped to around £1550 new so looks like it will be replaced. Add to that the length of time it has been around for, and I think it is safe to say that it is very likely it will be out soon (i.e. this year).

I do not NEED one now, so have not bought yet. My thinking is that it will have the 16.2mp of the D7000. I think the D700 RRP was £1999 so would expect the replacement to me £2k plus, and doubt it would drop too much for the first few months. There may be some deals on new ones, and a boost to SH market when people upgrade. So I am planning on waiting and getting a new or 2nd hand one then.

While the D800would be good as it is newer, I dont need the video (although may be quite nice, especially with good glass), and the 12.1mp I am sure will be fine.

I get the impression the world and his wife is waiting for the D700 to be replaced so they can buy a cheap D700 second hand!

I wouldn't wait. New model will be in short supply. I reckon £2499 if you can find one for several months after launch.
If you don't need video grab a D700. Not likely to get any better deal than those currently available.
It's a VERY capable bit of kit. Love mine so much I bought another !

There is no logic in this - I own a D700 but if I ever upgrade (which will be quite a while as I like the D700) it certainly WON'T be the D700's successor as I will wait till I can afford the D3s (or whatever its replacement is).

It makes more sense to move to the next level rather than just upgrade to get the replacement.

If you like what the D700 has to offer & it suits the VR11 quite nicely as well as a 24-70 then why not get one

Like many said if you don't need the video etc then get the D700...

my only problem is atm i only have the 70-200 that will work well with the d700 so i really need to get another decent lens first. if only it wasnt all so expensive.

Lee, I agree with your thoughts above. I would work on upgrading your glass first before buying a new body, because as soon as you get a D700 or 'D800' you will want to upgrade the rest of your lenses asap! I'd get the 24-70 f2.8 and enjoy using it now, and the situation regarding the D700 and its replacement should be clearer quite soon. I love my D700 and won't be replacing it any time soon, regardless of the features on its 'replacement'.

If your thinking of the 24-70 2.8 (nice but expensive) why not have a look at the "beast" - Nikons 28-70 2.8 ..... Trevbray has one (so did I till I got the 24-70) which he uses on the D700 - nice carcker of a lens £650ish +/- (lot less than a 24-70)

Just a thought - also just to throw a cat in amongst the pidgeons & to add to the confusion :naughty:

There is some sense in this as it allows the option of setting aperture via the aperture ring and will also work with an older film cam.

I have the same dilemma going on in my head at the minute.

Though it would be a d90>d700 for me. I know there are things I would definitely benefit from in the upgrade but I just can't seem to make the leap.

I've be thinking about it for donkeys, weighing up the pro's and con's, researching it for that many hours it would make a grown man weep.....I just cannot decide if it would be tangibly worth the cash for me personally. No one can decide for me, I know, which makes it even harder. I wish I could be forced to just buy the damn thing!

I can vouch for this combo, I bought a mint 28-70 on Ebay for use on my D700, and am very impressed with it. Mind you, D700 + 28-70 + grip is a big heavy package, you really wouldn't want to spend all day wielding that setup without some serious warm up exercises beforehand............

Someone mention The Beast........you'll never get your hands on mine. When I'm not taking pictures I knock nails in with it, dual purpose !!

The D800 is going to start shipping in the second half of 2011. It will be more expensive than the current model, and be in very short supply. Don't expect it to fall in price for at least 3-6 months.

So if you can happily wait until then and afford the higher price, go for it.

If not, buy the D700. It's still cutting edge technology and better high ISO performance than anything Canon has to offer.

The only reason for not buying a D700 would be if you need video in your DSLR. Most people need DSLR video like fish need a bicycles.

@Lesco - 95% field of view viewfinder

There's almost 100% chance that the D800 will have 100% viewfinder coverage. The only reason why the D700 has 95% is because of a design compromise to allow them to retro-fit a dust reduction system to the D3 sensor. This caused slight obscuration of the mirror. They will have no need to make this compromise on the D800.

Good call. 28-70 is still a good lens, as are a lot of older Nikon lenses.
