I had my first proper day shooting with the D700 yesterday at a civil partnership so I took the opportunity to shoot a few detail shots and candids at ludicrously high ISO just as a test. (So please don't go commenting on the shots, that's not what I did them for, it's a test shot!)

First up ISO 6400. No noise reduction and it's not even been sharpened yet, straight out of camera.

and then just to be really silly I shot a few on one of the "H" settings so the reported ISO is 8000. :) I did run this one through Nik DFine as it was getting a little noisy but just shows that even at stupidly hight ISO's it's still recoverable!

Love to see what a D3s would be like........night vision? :D

Great stuff, I've been wanting to see some examples of this, so thanks.

Great camera. I'm considering an upgrade to these soon, so always nice to see test shots like these.

Impressive. :)

It's the only DSLR I lust after but sadly I have a bag full of Canon lenses.

I went from a D200 to a D700 so imagine my surprise :)

Brilliant aren't they. In a few years we are no longer going to need flashes

Good stuff Ali, never tried the really high settings, might give em a go :)

It's not as bad as most people would have you believe, have a look for threads started by Ali and me ;)

I really wanted to explore where it was time to switch the flash on :)

About 9 O'Clock! lol

I could just about manage to shoot guests by candle light. I did try a few with the 70-200 to see how low I could manage on shutter speed vs using high ISO. I did have fun trying it out to see what it would do. While the guests were between buffet and party time I had about an hour and a half just to do some detail shots so I went playing with the second camera. Also had some practice with the 105mm macro which is pretty good fun and had ludicrous DOF :)

No, we will need them - for the 'creative' photos. Imagine what a clean ISO1600 and a few top of the range flashes could do!

I agree with the creativity aspect, the ability to creat light where we want it. It's just really rather nice being able to shoot candids without the guests even knowing :) I managed to shoot a load of them all just smiling and laughing and enjoying the evening.

Ali - simple shots, that illustrate the D700's ability -

now what body part would yield the greatest income:thinking::lol:

AliB get them thoughts of the D3s out of your mind you naughty girl.

That first one straight out of the camera is awesome

Are these images scaled down for web or 100% crops, I assume the former and if so I'd be keen to see some 100% crops. Impressive none the less.

Really interesting article - my d80 can't quite cut the mustard any more in terms of iso :(

Even at 10x8 it's good - I've printed up to A3+ from images exposed at 3200 and 6400 on a D3 and to me they look like 'old' shots taken on 400iso film...

Turn them into good B&W with the full range of tones and they are awesome! :)

This combination of FF sensor and (relatively) low megapixel count seems to be an area that Canon have no interest in, preferring instead to push their pixel density ever higher and higher in all their cameras. Why!?
