I've had this new D700 for couple months now but noticed a few times the camera would be non responsive and couldn't do anything....it's like the light meter shut things down and wouldn't wake the camera up. I tried turning on and off first and didn't do anything but after a minute or so would come back, not sure if something I did or not. I'm seeing if disabling the meter shut down will stop this from happening, but haven't tested it out on a shoot yet. Just was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience?

reset. perhaps its not shooting when it hasnt locked focus?

Yes, I have experienced that when the focus would not lock in poor light.
Decoupling the shutter from requiring focus lock overcomes it, but at the risk of a higher proportion of out of focus pictures.

I had this with D700 + 70-200mm f2.8 lens, locking up, not focussing or even taking the shot but just getting black image. I found that cleaning the contacts on lens and camera solved my issues and also making really sure lens was really locked tight onto camera. Sounds so silly and simple but it worked for me and I've not had any problem since .....touch wood!
