Well the D700 which I bought the other day arrived at 7.30am thats to Mr Postie - £500 cheaper than what I paid for for my original purchase from RGBTech back in July.

4 months later, £500 cheaper. How prices fall!

Its a D700 "kit" (never seen these before), I doubt I will keep the 24-120 VR lens as I don't need VR, but I think the D700 will be a keeper - if I buy twice, the second time is usually for good

Well I'm off to "Andy-ify" my D700, with GGS Protector + DK-17m then do a bit of shooting :D

I still have the Canon 5d MKII on pre-order though... !

Andy, 'm in awe of your bargaining/ bargain hunting skills!

Agreed about the buy twice - I'm after another Access Virus synth, and this one shall be my last.... oh, and te D700 sure looks tasty - again... Are you going with a dual Canon/Nikon setup - with a selection of the best lenses from each camp - now, if money was no object, it's a great idea!

Wow, envious! PD excuse the lack of understanding but why wouldn't you need VR? I thought it would be an advantage but presumably atthe disadvantage of more weight?

I've never needed VR, even for long focal lengths. I always prefer fast lenses.

Here is the D700 after a quick 20 minutes "Andy-fication", Optech Strap fitted, replaced the stock viewfinder with the DK-17m, and fitted the GGS Protector (both the DK-17m and GGS really add to the D700 in usability, massive improvement to the viewfinder, and huge improvement over the stock Nikon scratch-magnet screen!)

A very nice 'modded' D700 there! I like the look of the GGS protector. May have to invest in one of those, assuming I can find one for the lowly D200.

Wohoooo, and what a sound there is on this beast too... I love mine! (check lowest synth in avatar). Curious as to why you need 2 though, do you use VirusControl - in which case you get an effective 16 of 'em!

OP - sorry about the OT :)

You can, I use one on my S5 Pro:

I really like these screens, SOO much nicer than the Nikon stock screens :)

Ah excellent. I bet they are better. The screen looks a lot sharper

Its so much better, they are about £7 or £8, so cheaper than replacing the Nikon screen once it gets scratched, and these things are scratch proof anyhow, you can just wipe them down if you get nose greese etc on it, without smudging / scratching.

IMHO its the best £8 you can spend on a Nikon body.

mmmm.... nose grease

Yep, I'll reckon I'll get one. Cheers for the heads-up

Yeah, it may be OT, but I sold mine in February [one of the first TI users in the UK] and have regretted it since... BTW, if you're a KVR member or an FM8 user, have you downloaded any of my patches?

Back on topic.... damn, I'd decided to keep the D80 until 25k more shutter clicks before going for the D700.... must... resist....must.... resist....

Congratulations Mr. PD :) .. you got yourself one heck of a good deal there. Enjoy your toy.

I'm so confused! Do you use Canon or Nikon these days Mr Duck???? :p

:plusone:

I, too, thought you were migrating over to them Canon-camp !?

Yeah, I thought the D700 wasn't up to the resolving power you were after too, surely this D700 will perform the same as the last one you had? Although I guess paired with the 5D mk II means you'll have the best of both worlds so you can finally find a system your totally happy with? (not to mention opening up a whole new world of lenses to buy, sell and buy again as you must have exhausted the Nikon line up now :D ;) )

Be good to see how the D700 compares with the 5D though!

Where's the best place to buy these from?they do look much better than the plastic cr*p

I get mine from a Ebay seller called greenlife-style - very nice folks and I love the e-mails they send:

Greenlife is snugly with the trend. We will keep updating our stock list.
Please keep an eye to our store and you can find the newest contraptions.

Well worth an order :)

Thanks Andy just ordered some:thumbs:

I think I'll grab one of these protectors. That'll be the forth thing I've bought (85mm 1.4, Tammy 17-35mm, Thom Hogan guide) for the D700 I don't own yet.

Have just ordered two protectors .. for the D300 and the D700 ( i nearly have :D )

Got them from greenlife as well

can you tell me what the dk.17m does please?

Its a viewfinder magnifier, 1.2x strength.

I starting using these on the D2X (which already has a superb viewfinder), and noticed that the D700 looked like it could take them as well.

I don't believe the DK-17m is "officially" a part for the D700 but it fits and works 100% fine, and can really help if you want to use manual focus.

You'll probably want to adjust the viewfinder diopter adjustment when you fit them by 1 notch.

thanks have you a good [cheap] source for them i think it sounds worth trying

Is there somewhere I can get an idea which of my Nikon and Sigma lenses will fit the D700 and work as full frame?

I'm thinking my 70-300mm VR and Sigma 12-24 are ok but my 18-70 and 55-200 VR are DX or am I completely wrong! If none of them work as full frame I better start saving!

The 70-300 VR definately works. Sorry never seen or used a Sigma 12-24 but that should work fine.

The 18-70 is DX only and will put the D700 into "crop" mode - ie 5.1 megapixels.

The 55-200 VR is technically a DX lens, BUT you can turn DX mode off and you'll still get a larger than DX frame and IQ is VERY good.

Thanks PD! Encouraging to be one step closer to a 700! My piggy bank suddenly looked a bit more vulnerable to being smashed open... :)

What's wrong with the 14-24 AF-S  .. did you not have one?

Ill never keep up with you andy!!!

You sold the last one because it didnt have the resolution you needed, and now youve bought another.

The D700 was up against the new 24mp Sony A900 this month in Digital Photo, and they said even on an A2 print, it was a negligible difference in IQ. I think its a cracking camera, about the only thing id give up my D300 for....

Cheers Andy

IIRC it's the lack of filters that was the issue with the 14-24mm.

If I was to go full frame (soon hopefully) I would want this lens, but the filter situation would make it my least used lens I reckon as I usually have an ND grad on. Shame really after hearing such good things from this glass.

Glad to see you got a D700 again Andy. Get some shots up:thumbs:

Don't discount the 17-35/2.8 - it's a corker.

Oh for sure. But if I was to get a D700 then the 24-70 would be the way to go for me. And to get the 17-35 too would be a little to far money wise. If I could pick on up at good second hand price, then I may be tempted.
