Hi all,

I originally owned a D5000 which was a great starter camera, I decided to make the step up and purchase a 5D mark ii, I've had it a week and it has already broken. I have spoken to the camera shop and they have mentioned I can have an exchange, different camera or money back.

I have to say I was disappointed with the build quality of the 5d and couldn't really get used to it... this has made me think of 3 things,

1. Stick it out and learn more with my D5000 for a bit longer, maybe buy a couple more lenses.

2. Look at purchasing the D600 instead (has fantastic reviews)

3. Get an exchange and stick it out with the 5D mark ii.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance! It's a lot of money to spend and would be grateful for some advice.

Cheers.

Get some 1Ds/1D/D3 tank for yourself  They are almost indestructible, maybe except that D3 down the thread list.

5DII, being badly built as they are, should last far longer than a week, and certainly longer than D5000 (on average of course). I believe D600 is also a bit plasticky

It was brand new? In what way did it break?

I would say it really depends which system you are most comfortable with. You don't seem very sure. What made you choose the D5000 to begin with? If you feel you need to learn more with that, then going full frame may be a little too soon? I would suggest getting to know your D5000 more in depth, maybe get some new lenses for it.

I actually use both, Canon at work, Nikon at home. I'm a designer professionally, not a photographer...

Part of me for upgrading is because I am in a position financially to do so at the moment, I know that sounds daft, but I would like to think that either of the pro end cameras would last me 5 or so years rather than staying with the D5000.

The 5d broke, I placed the lens, felt a click and the small glass sensor had dropped out, tried placing it back in and it wouldn't go, the rivets seem to have broke off.

Would your budget stretch to a D800? Because for studio/fashion photography I don't think there is a better full frame camera out there. You could use the same lenses you do with your D5000, though, you'd really want for FX pro glass to get best out of it.

sounds like you touched the focus screen latch with your lens and the focus screen fall out?

or did the actual mirror dropped off?

What lenses have you already got at the moment?

5D badly built? Maybe it's because I haven't handled anything else other than XXXD series cameras but mine feels pretty robust!

Yes, It was the mirror that dropped out... :/

I have spoken to the company and they have offered me the D600 with the 24-85mm lens for a similar price as an alternative. But unsure because of the quality of the lens?

Part of me is thinking give the 5D another go as this was a better bundle with a higher quality lens.

The lenses I have at the moment are the basic kit lens that came with the D5000 - 18 - 55mm and a 35mm prime 1.8.

Any more advice would be much appreciated, I'm making a decision tonight, thanks for the replies.

I have had a 5DII for a year and you seem to have had very bad luck. I love my 5DII but you have to go with what feels best in your hands and what you are comfortable with I 'd say. Love the full frame... L

Is the bundled Canon lens the 24-105mm f4L? That's a quality lens, sharp f4 throughout, definitely better than 24-85mm variable aperture lens.

All your current lenses are DX, so you are same as me, starting out fresh when moving to full frame.

I think you just had very bad luck, and giving it another go certainly won't hurt. With the lens, Canon's bundle is a much better deal.

Thanks all!

Awful for making decisions!! :/ just feel as though I want to get it right!!

At the moment I am in the process of a cash refund and going to think about either purchasing the 6D or buying a Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX II AF 11-16mm f/2.8 (Nikon Mount) as an addition to my crop sensor and keep this for a bit longer.
