I recently purchased a Nikon D5300 and have today taken my first images in Raw - till now I have kept to Fine
I find that I cannot open/edit/convert these Raw images with the View NX2 software which came with the camera
It will open Raw images taken with my D5100
I really would like some help with overcoming this

I don't think Nikon support NX2 on new cameras, it seems strange the CD has been put in your camera pack. If you go on the Nikon website and download Capture NX-D for free, that will work. In fact I have just switched the JPEG off on my camera and take my images raw, and edit and convert them on Capture NX-D. You can do a lot more with raw files than jpegs, and it isn't that hard to do. Hope this helps.

View NX2 will work with the D5300, you may need the latest version of View NX2 (version 2.8.2) go to Nikon website and download the latest version or get your current one to check for updates.

The software that Nikon stopped doing was Capture NX2 which was purely an image editing program, this was replaced by Capture NX-D

I went for the first one - NX-D - and I am pleased to find I can now work on my images using that, I just need to fathom out how it works!

Oh dear! I'm back again

Last night, as I said, I downloaded Capture NX-D - I was able to convert my Raw images to jpegs, which meant I knew I had some images I could work on
This morning I've gone into NX-D, and it will not let me edit my Raw images, from the D5300 - it will from the D5100
So I downloaded View NX-2 from the Nikon website, and that won't let me access my Raw D5300 images either - D5100, yes
So, whilst, not in panic mode (as I have jpegs), I'm in a quandary now as to why I still cannot edit any D5300 Raw images

Also, I notice the links in the replies last night led me to some sort of Amazon Nikon site
I googled Nikon and used the Nikon UK site after logging in for the downloads
 
Unless you are willing to get some different software, I dont think you have many options. As has been mentioned above, View NX (latest version) will allow you to make basic adjustments to your RAW files and convert them to Jpeg. Capture NX2 was discontinued, and replaced with a vastly inferior product in NX-D. Im not sure why you you having difficulty openning your RAW files in View NX (if it is indeed the latest version). As has been mentioned, you need version 2.8.2

Are you able to walk us through what it is you are doing?
 
I downloaded View NX-2 last night from the Nikon UK site - I can't see any reference to the version, but I've just opened it and clicked on "check for updates" which tells me there are no updates available
Now, I click on a Raw image from my browser, click "edit", and I can't move any of the sliders - I can on Raw images taken on the D5100 but not on the D5300 - nor will it let me convert it to a jpeg
 
I've now gone into Capture NX-D - this will let me convert a D5300 Raw image to a jpeg, but it will not let me edit it - it will let me edit a D5100 Raw image
 
This is the latest View NX2 version .... HERE .... version 2.10.3

I see they have a new version out View NX-i, however that will not allow any editing I wonder if that is the one you downloaded.

Try downloading the one from my link above, see if that works
 
In theory you should be able to edit the images, unfortunately it is not a program that I use for that purpose as I have the old Capture NX2 running on my Mac.

Are you trying to edit the .jpeg after you have converted it to from raw, I know that you cannot edit .jpegs with View NX2

I'm trying to edit Raw images downloaded from the D5300 and neither software will let me

I have been able to convert them to jpegs

Having had a quick play with a raw image in View NX2 (on a pretty quick mac pro) it does take a while for the image to react to any input on the sliders.

Hopefully someone who uses View NX for editing can offer some insight and you can get it sorted
 
There's no delay with the D5100 Raw images, though
