Hi guys recently bought a d5200 camera with a
Nikon AF-S 70-300mm F4.5-5.6G VR ED AF Zoom Lens
which its great but wanted a bit more zoom than what i already have for my bird watching hobby. I was told to get a teleconverter so i done a bit of research and found out the pros and cons about loosing f stops and sharpness. but excited that i could turn my 300mm lens into a 600mm with a x2 teleconverter, but then went on to read that not all are compatable, Has anyone matched these up with any brand i would like to hear before ordering one off ebay.
cheers.

I would not recommend getting any converters for that lens, it does not take Nikon converted for a start. You can get kenko ones, the 1.4x would be the best option if you really want to go down that route but for the 70-300mm you really don't want to be using converters as IQ will decrease massively let alone the AF

will the 1.4 make much difference from the x2,
cheers

Just remember aswell with the 2x on I believe AF is not possible but don't quote me on that, 2x even on my 400mm is too much of a push, I wouldn't even look at it with a 70-300mm, just save your money for a bigger lens if you want more reach! The 1.4x will give you bit more focal length at a massive cost of IQ, Saying that a couple of years back a guy bought a kenko 1.4x converter on me from the classifieds and got some nice shots of starling with the 70-300mm attached, keep in mind anything less than perfect light you won't want the converter on for, personally just save your money for a better lens

There are many misconceptions about Teleconverters being a holy grail solution. Teleconverters are designed mainly for fast lenses f2.8/f4. Many lenses like f5.6 zooms can't fit nikon Teleconverters, if you can they image quality can be severely reduced and you lose AF in any thing but perfect light. Nikon recommend your d5200 will only AF up to f5.6. I would recommend saving your money and later on purchase a 300mm f4 and add a 1.4 TC when you can.
