Hello all, this is my first post on this site.
I have only been into photography for about 18 months and feel as though i need to upgrade my camera. After reviewing various cameras i eventually bought the Nikon d3100. I use this with the kit lens 18-55. I have also purchased the Nikon DX 55-200 4-5.6 ED VR IF and also Nikon AF 50mm 1.8. It is a very good entry level dslr and has produced some very good images. I feel the time has arrived to upgrade to a higher level camera (Nikon only) and have narrowed the choice between the new d5200 or the older d7000. I am the kind of person who will not swap cameras every time a new one enters the market. I would like to do some HDR and time-lapse photography in the future and so am looking for advice and feedback on the 2 cameras mentioned. look forward to your replies. Keith

Can't comment on the D5200 as never used 1.
D7000 is IMHO still the best DX camera currently available until they release it's replacement in the next few months!:)
For time lapse it has a built in intervalometer.
Everything is adjustable from buttons on the back of the camera rather than buried in menus!
I think the prices are fairly similar as you can now get brand new UK D7000 for around the £600 mark.
You also mention HDR which the D7000 also has an auto bracketing feature.

D7000 without question.

Unless having a swivel screen is an absolute must for you, the D5200 offers nothing over it.
 
The D5200 isnt a massive upgrade over the D3200 which isnt a massive upgrade over the D3100. I think the only difference will be the sensor and some of the fluff, I think the D7000 has genuinely better features and is aimed at more of an advanced user.
 
The D7000 is a great camera. Having all the buttons and dials is major advantage, I hardly go into the menus. Being able to independently alter the shutter and aperture is very important to me (with auto ISO its even better). The top LCD screen is also very helpful for quickly checking settings. Also having an inbuilt focus motor opens up more lens too. I now wouldn't go below the d7000 range (D3200 or D5200) due to these reasons.

When I brought the D7000 I was originally looking at either the D5100 or D90, but I found a cheap S/H D7000 otherwise I would have gone for the old D90.
 
I think the D7000 is perhaps one of the best digital cameras ever made. It can do everything you want of it. Great low light performance; reasonably fast continuous shooting; good AF, fantastic image quality, pretty high resolution (more gives little advantage with a crop sensor camera); good features; well built, great intuitive controls, can use D lenses; 1080P video.... I could go on. It's not just a list of features, it really is very, very good at all these things.

Cheap these days too.
 
Thank you all for replying. The d7000 is the firm favourite. I have an offer of £100 part exchange for my d3100 just wondering what the going rate is to sell it private.
 
Around £200 seems the average price on Ebay.

Not sure exactly as I've not been paying attention but I'd say a lot more than £100, probably double that I'd have thought.

If you do want to shift it for £100 give me a shout :D
