Hello all

Well santa has been and i have the cash to buy my first dlsr after months of waiting!

Question is which camera best suits my needs out of the
Nikon D5100 or the Canon 600d

I'm mainly looking at doing portrait shots and taking a few action shots down at the local boxing club.

The video side of the cameras dont really bother me although would be used for basic family stuff. Has anyone got any ideas which route to go down for portrait lenses i know nikon do a 35mm and canon a 50mm any idea of which set up is best??
I know i'm asking a lot! but any advice or ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Both will be as capable as each other, best thing would be to go to the shops and try handling both and get the one which feels better to you :)

Normally I would agree with this but since the op mentions boxing and portraits, and assuming a flash isn't an option, then the d5100 is going to be a lot better in low light. It really is exceptional at high iso. I believe there is a Sony and Pentax that use the same sensor so they would be worth a look too.

If you do go for the Nikon, the 35mm is excellent though the new 50mm Afs may be even better for portraits if you have the room

It maybe wise to consider lens choices in the future as the Nikon doesn't have a built in focus motor so you'll only be able to af with the later afs lenses
As for iso performance i know the nikon is best in class but the canon is not far behind, i have a 60d (same sensor) and shot gigs at iso 3200 and the results are very acceptable indeed
