Hi all.

Ive had my d5100 (with 18-55mm kit lens) for going up a year now and feel i need to upgrade my lens collection. Ive read loads of other recomendation threads and have not really found anyone looking for the same advice as me.

Im thinking of getting 2-3 lenses over time dependant on cost. My subjects are:

Baby portraits (indoor)
Cars (stationary)
Aircraft (stationary and flying)
Landscapes and buildings.
And just general candid family/freinds shots (in/outdoor)

I can budget around £200 a lens, any help would be greatfully recieved

Thanks

Jim

35mm nikon f1.8, tamron 17-50 f2.8, sigma 10-20

I have all of the above. I think 50mm will be too long for indoor shots, with a 35mm you can always take a step forward ;)

Don't know if you are looking for new or used but if its the latter, they should fit your budget albeit the tamron and the sigma at the top end ( but you'll have saved on the 35mm )

I have a D5100. I have the following and don't feel the need for anything else:

Nikkor 55-300mm 4.5-56 Telephoto
Nikkor 35mm 1.8
Nikkor 10-24mm Wide Angle (amazing lens for creativity)
Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens (which I use when I just pick up and go)

Of that, I would recommend the 35mm and the 55-300 or 55-200.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Best price ive seen is £170 posted for the 55-300 from digitalrev and £148 for the 35mm from jessops.

Ive read a few 35 v 50mm threads and tried locking at bothe sizes the kit lens i have to see which id prefer so ill probably try them both instore before i buy.

Thanks so very much for the help guys

Jim

For UK prices have a look at camera price buster.

I've always bought my lenses from Amazon.

Im looking to get a new lens asap as ive been asked to shoot my bro inlaw on a rallying experince. Was looking to get the Nikon AF-S 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 G ED VR Lens but am concerened about the slow focusing, would this be ok or is there anything recomended that would be faster. Camera price buster has cheapest at £229 posted, i wojld look to be spending the same amount maybe a bit more if needed.

Thanks for any help

Check out digital rev im sure its about £150 on there and there are plenty of discount codes online

For indoor baby portraits I would recommend the Nikkor 50 1.8G.

Thanks for that guys.

Ill find a local shop where i can try both the 35mm and the 50mm. Meanwhile ill lock my kit lens at 35/50mm to get a feel.

Anyone got or could point us in th rght direction of a discount code please?

It was the cheapest on cpb. I know i could of saved from buying fron digitalrev but i know i would be "the one" if it can go wrong - it will. Id rather buy it from a shop i can walk into if need be.

A good all rounder with have decent focus speed is the nikon 18-200 m&m
You won't buy a better all rounder than this good walkabout lens.
Forget the 55-300 as its to plasticky

Ive had a play with a friends 55 300 and liked it.

18 200 is a little pricey but if i had that kind of money to spend then its a lens definetly consider, maybe in the future.

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for that phil, not had a chance to try the lenses you'mentioned. I would of done had jessops been open but it closed down leaving the closest shop in birmingam which is a bit of a road trip for me. Need to find a local tog shop.
