Hi does anyone know where I can find a list of compatable lenses with the d5100 ie has inbuilt focus motors.

I'm aware that all Nikon lenses must have af-s on the name but what do I need to look out for with tamron or sigma lenses?

Any other brands you would recommend?

Thanks

Sigma HSM denotes the motor.
Tamron, not sure, some of their older lenses don't have the appropriate naming, even tough some have motors.

Nikon look for AF-S (Silent Wave Motor)
Sigma look for HSM (Hypersonic Motor)
Tamron should mention built in motor, some lenses such as the highly rated 17-50mm f/2.8 were formerly available without built in motor

Thanks very much all. Another question I was looking at The Nikon 40mm afs macro lens. It says it is 1:1 and is only £175 after cash back. Is that good value for a 1:1 macro?

Or am I better getting a say 18-200 lens and getting a kendo 25 extension tube?

Pondered the 40mm for ages as well, and went for the 35mm, no regrets as such...for 40 macro, you will be right up to the subject and need to consider the light as well with that. (you might have that handled anyway?)
Some good vids on utube of the 40.
The 40 and the zoom you mention are different lenses for different uses in the whole. Obviously the 40 could still be used as walkabout, but 40 - 200 is quite a jump/difference. Depends also if you like primes or zooms. Some do, some dont, some it doesnt bother either way...you need to try though...

Think the 40 was just over 200 quid when i looked a year back, maybe 230ish. 35 is about 130ish ;)

All depends on what you use it for, what environments and whether you like fixed length really.

.....should add, thinking back, seem to remember the 40 2.8 was a 'master of none' sort of lens if that makes sense....
I'd get a prime in that range though anyway, always a place for it ;) cheap and very cheerful 35, 50 or the 40....35 imo on crop ;)
Others will no doubt have other tales, its a very individual thing imo....

Thanks. Basically I'm looking for a macro lens and a general walking arround lens.

The 35 can't really do macro but the 40 can do walking arround if that makes sense? Lol

I want a zoom lens also but im not looking to spend over 500 on all of my lenses. Preferably less than 500 also lol.

I was thinking the 50 mm macro new for 175 from jessops. And possibly sigma 18-200 / 18-250 second hand from mpb which comes in arround 200.

Any thoughts?
