Hi all, I'm in the process of changing from Olympus. I was going to stick with my e420 but the lenses are just too expensive and the camera's low light performance can be poor, which is especially frustrating at family events when I'm automatically the one taking the photos. I don't want anything top end, I'm not experienced enough and quite frankly, wealthy enough. I've been looking at the Nikon D5000.. What do you guys think? I've compared the E420 with the D5000 on a compare website and there's plenty of differences.. Heres the link:

My aim from changing is to get better picture quality and especially in lower light situations as well as the ability to buy cheaper lenses.
 
George, I have the D5K, and also the D7K.
The D5000 is a great starter camera, I still love and use mine. ONLY downside is it aint got a focus motor, my advice would be to get a D90, new or secondhand. That way, you can save the money on glass as the D90 has the motor and you can buy cheaper lenses.

Seems a bit more of a sidestep really, according to that site less than a stop better noise? No idea where they get data from tho.

AFAIK Canon lenses tend to be cheaper than the Nikon counterparts, although some of the more recent high end additions buck this trend a little. (70-200 L IS II for example)
 
Thanks for your advise, the D3100 looks good also, does this have a focus motor?
 
How does not having a focus motor effect the performance? Or overall camera? I'm still a noob ^.^

Basically it means that only AF-I and AF-S (lenses with internal focus motors) will autofocus on cameras without a focus motor. This can cut you out of a lot of of older lenses which require an in body motor to focus.

If your only going to use new lenses then that won't be a problem. However I'd suggest considering a D90. The image quality will be pretty much identical to that of the D5000, but it has a lot of other useful features, such as an in body focus motor, a larger brighter viewfinder, and dual control wheels that I think you'll find are worth it.

But if the in-body focus motor goes wrong, then back goes the camera to be repaired, but with the focus motor in the lens at least you only send that lens back and still have another lens and your camera to carry on taking photo's.

I had a D5000 and it was a great camera, but I upgraded to a D300s because I needed a better camera, otherwise I would still have it.

I also have a D5000 ( since last October ) love the camera but also want to upgrade to a D300S. Would be interested to know if you noticed a big difference AFC?

George, personally, I would suggest either the D5000 or D5100 or a D90. But if the budget allows then either go for the D7000 or D300S.
 
D5000 here

lots talk about the in-body motor...but my thoughts were I'll only buy 3 lenses anyway

and lets not forget we 'hobbyists'' dont all need 2.8 lens

35mm AF-S 1.8.....still to buy - new £160.?
Sigma 17-70m 2.8-4 HSM..........used from here...£145
Nikon 55-200mm AF-S VR ......used [today from same chap.:lol:]...£110

= £415 ..hardly a huge outlay.....:thumbs:

PS , the new Nikon 55-300 AF-S VR is about £220 on eBay new if you need a bit more reach ...I dont
 
D5000 is a cracker might sell mine only because i fancy a 85.1.8 and a motor :cool:

I agree with Yardbent . . . however . . . thats a 'but' with an 'H':) The small slightly dull? pentamirror viewfinder drove me mad!!! and the animated screen focused so slowly, I had to go back to a D90 . . . yes I went down from a 90 to a 5k for the animated screen (dodgy knee, low angle shots, cant get up once down!!)

Image quality is on a pare with the 90, the 5100 is supposed to be better?? But the small viewfinder did it for me. Mmm . . . I'd, compare the 5000/5100 VF with the E420, I think it might not pose a problem . . . ??

The main difference is the AF, it is so much quicker and as a sports photographer - mainly RU - it helps a great deal and its weather protected

Also I can get 7fps indtead of the 4fps with the D5000.

I get 100% viewfinder coverage as well.

Now I want a D3s. :thumbs:

it always happens here on ''what camera/upgrade'' questions

the original OP guidelines are forgotten as more and more posters say..ah well yes, get the Nikon DXX or the Canon 'whatever' [sorry] as the IQ/focus/speed/video is SO much better

of COURSE it is - if you have £1500 for a body.......:razz:

But John, he could get a S/H D90 for the new price of a D5K, that has to be a worthwhile upgrade. Can get a whole new lease of life from lens's he has/wants to use, just a sensible option :shrug:

Dont know about 'upgrade' Yardbent, I'm so fed up with things at the moment, one of which you have touched on:naughty: I'm thinking of bailing out to a compact??? Quality of course . . . :shrug:

I think one of the inherent problems of any forum is that there can come a point where the Forum itself becomes as, or more, important than the hobby

or rather that too much time is spent here

I have become aware these past few months that I'm ''talking about it'' rather than ''doing it''

I'm going to try setting a task each week .. and NOT discussing it here - but looking at the results for my own satisfaction

it wasn't that long ago we took photographs for our own enjoyment only. and didn't feel the need, nor had the opportunity via the web, to share our efforts on a global scale

a little effort to get back to basics and rekindle my enthusiasm again

I would love nothing more than to be able to afford a second hand camera and save myself a fortune.. However lumps of money don't come into my house very often and usually anything I want that's a treat and not a necessity is bought on credit - I've done a lot of comparing and listened to your comments - and I've applied for credit on the D3100. I've seen a heck load of photos from this camera now and so I'm hoping my credit is accepted and it'll arrive within a few days, although with it being bank holiday tomorrow I doubt I'll find out until Tuesday ^_+

Bloody sports photographers thread showing night games taken @ ISO 12800 and no noise, if I hadn't seen that I wouldn't want one. :lol:

Personal opinion George, its the pick of the entry level/value for money bunch . . . :thumbs: You enjoy it, wring its neck . . . ;) . . . don't hanker after better, thats the slippery slope down!!!

I got 2 x D5000 and I love them

No issue for me with no motor built in as all my lenses are AF-S
 
I can understand why people invest a lot into photography equipment though, even if it's only for personal use.. When I look at my photos I don't generally mind what others think of them, but I remember the moment in which I captured them. When I'm in my photobucket account which has well over 1000 shots ranging from 14 years old to my current age of 19, i'm in photo heaven, my life - literally documented & that's what I love about photography. Whats even better is when I look back at all the photos of my family from decades ago and I see the photos my dad took when he himself was into photography, I find myself wondering what was going through my dads mind when he captured the shots and so on.. It really is a wonderful thing :)
My credit got rejected on the D3100 - however I am now feeling very excited as my Nan got wind of the situation and ordered me a shiney new D3100 which should arrive Thursday :D :D

Camera arrived this evening - really happy with it, feels and looks good, and it's performance has so far been good as well, i'll post my first picture into general photo sharing now :)
