Yes
sorry if this has been asked already, but can I use the SB900 wirelessly with the D5000 without having a wireless slave flash controller (SU4)?

And if the SU4 isn't a requirement, how do I set it up - as the manual doesn't make it entirely clear (but I may have missed the relevant bit somewhere  )

thanks

You cant as far as im aware the D5000 does not have a built in trigger. You could buy another sb-900 or 800 to use as a commander or use a trigger such as the ebay ones flash in the pan sells or pocket wizards

Hi Maria - unfortunately the D5000 doesn't support wireless flash control.

CLS and optical slave are not the same things here Nawty.

If the D5000's built in flash can be set in manual power mode, then it can be used to trigger an SB-900 remotely as a regular old optical slave.

You don't need to purchase an SU-4 as the SB-900 has SU-4 mode built in. Just pop it in remote mode, go into the menu and enable SU-4 mode and you're good to go.

This is all, of course, assuming that the D5000 popup flash can be used in manual power mode, and if it can you'll want to have the popup set at minimum power, so that it'll still trigger the SB-900, but not contribute to the exposure.

thanks everyone :)

John, I've got the flash in 'remote' mode and I've got 2 'flash' settings in the menu on the D5000 - TTL or manual, and neither option fires the SB900  (and my on camera flash is not obstructed by anything)

Have I missed out some important setup step somewhere? I only ask as the SB900 keeps on giving a red double flash from the front?

thanks

Yup that's right, if the camera's popup will go into manual it'll work. That's what you want at minimum power.

But what you need to do is change the settings on the SB-900. Hold down the OK button until the menu pops up and go down to the 4th option which is "SU-4", and set it to on.

Then exit the menu and put the flash in remote mode by setting it on the dial. Now it'll act like a regular optical slave when you've got the switch set to "Remote".

You will only get manual power output from it, no TTL, so you'll have to physically wander over to the flash to adjust its output, but it'll work off-camera just fine. :)

It's ok Nawty, with the amount of "OMG CLS!" stuff Nikon put out, it's not surprising that many don't know some of their flashes will work as regular optical slaves too. :)
