Hi all, I have seen a deal for a D5000 with 2 lenses for £499 and am itching to just go for it. My reasoning is that it's not much more than the D3100 but it is the better camera.

What do you guys think?

Also one of the lenses is the standard one my partners D3000 came with (18-55) so I'm thinking of selling it, the other is a 55-200.

I would have been happy with a used D3000 or similar but tbh I just can't find any at a reasonable price, decisions decisions!!!
 
Sounds like an excellent deal and I would go for it if I were you, subject to the normal caveat of try before you buy to make sure it suits you.

Secondhand bodies for what you're looking for are going to be £350-ish anyway so it's £150 for a better camera, two lenses and a warranty.
 
It certainly is a great deal. I think it's a little debatable whether it's any better than the D3100. Both have features that the other doesn't.

I have a D5000 and I'm very pleased with it. My only niggle - and this is only coming to the fore as I get more experienced - is the lack of external buttons to alter settings. Nearly everything is menu driven which is fine but time consuming if you like fiddling with settings.

Most cameras at this end of the market are like this though so I wouldn't let it put you off. It's a great camera, has the same sensor as the D90 so is more than capable of taking a great shot. £500 with those two lenses is a bargain. It's actually a little annoying as I paid nearly £700 for a similar deal only 6 months ago.

It's very annoying that I am her partner and I only have a d3000, :bonk:
so the ball is in my half now, have to surprise :lol:

Can I ask you how long has the d5000 being around?
 
April 2009, so it's been out 2 years. It is due for a refresh, thus why the prices are dropping to clear stock.

The deals right now on the 5k are pretty good and I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up for a first time camera.

Hi Claire, i was looking at the same deal, it was jessops were i saw it........so i have the D5000 withe the 18-55 lens and i love it......but i miss being limited to 55mm....so if i was you i would go for it......and good luck

Bummer I paid £479 3 months ago for a body with the short kit lens :bang: that was the cheapest deal I could find at the time. Dead pleased with it though, go for it!
 
I think I will land up going for it, I decided I will hold off until I make sure I can actually shoot a good pic and the ones I have aren't just beginners luck. Heres hoping the deal is still on after the weekend

I've also heard that there is a D5100 due soonish, it will be interesting to see how it compares to the D3100.
 
I was advised not to buy the d5000 as it is a 2 year old camera. I should be buying something newer with my money... I wasnt totally convinced by this comment as it appears to still be a great camera.

Maybe, but it is still an excellent camera. I was going to sell mine to fund a 300s, but I've decided I will save longer and keep it as a spare.

The only area I find it lacking is the video mode - the newer ones offer full 1080p and AF throughout.

Everything else - I'm pretty happy with. I've had mine about a year now.

I may be wrong, but i looked at the D3100 and the D5000, i thought the D5000 was slightly larger with the same spec as the D3100.....but you won't be disappointed with the D5000 if you go for it........buy the way i'm a beginner too.

Yeah get it now and save money to buy more expensive lenses later! That's what i did
