D500

Tamron 150-600 ... very good lens, just wanted better.
Nikon 300 f2.8 VRII ... superb lens but fell into the wildlife trap of needing longer.
Nikon 400 f2.8 AF-S ... as above but still often regret selling it.
Nikon 500 f4 VR & 300 VR PF ... gives me the 'better' I wanted :)

Ouch £7990 for a lens

will a sigma 50-500 be a good match to go on it i want it for trips to the coast for general pics and also to get some sea birds etc and probably a few trips to bird gardens etc.
:)

In theory yes but you might want to research whether it will need a firmware update to be compatible with the camera.

One of the risks of buying 3rd-party lenses, new cameras sometimes surprisingly seem designed to encourage users to buy OEM lenses ... however 3rd-party manufacturers are wise to this and will charge for a firmware update to make the lens compatible. :)

ok as a newbie to this i have yet a lot to learn do you have any pointers as to where i would look to find out ?

I suppose one of the benefits of being a gramps :)

Thank you, I was pleased - first time out with a Sigma 150-600 Sport!

Cheers, yes you're not the first to say that!

Thank you!
if that's your 1st trip out i cant wait to see more!

can i ask are these all superimposed on a different background? they look "cut out" somehow, or is it just the pp sharpening showing?

It must be the sharpening to your eye. It could possibly be the masking slider that I used on LR to only sharpen the bird and perch?

These are taken at my feeding station, where I have various perches setup for different bg's :)

Here's a link to the thread if you're interested to see what progress I am making ;)

thank you, interesting. yep just a bit to much for me, seems to look unnatural but as you say each to there own

Rookies heres my 2 pennath

i have the Sigma C and the reason i have is Weight, to carry either the Nikon or Sigma S round a track would be a pain, as they are indeed more orientated to Birds and Wildlife shooting, so for that reason i went C, the S is sharper at 600mm, however after using Focal pro ive fine tuned mine and i cant tell now...the Nikon is i think a tad sharper than the C at 500mm. You can also buy the dock for Sigma, which make the focus aggressively fast, i have this set onto position 1 on the custom settings and on 2 i have aggressive VR.

The sigma is known to focus breathe and thus i did hear reports its only really 450mm, how much is true i don't know, but I'm back to weight again i didn't care. My main focal range when shooting sports is around 450s rarely do i go 600 (900 APS-C )

If it was my Money, if your shooting birds wildlife and want something on a tripod get the Nikon, if your gonna walk miles or shoot round a track get the 150-600 C or Nikons 80-400.

This was taken in a dank dark corner iso 1100, the fella with me with a Canon 5d mk iv was at iso 10000?
My shot with a tamron 150-600 and my d500, I have no idea about Canon but I certainly prefer the images my Nikon and Tammy produce

Why on earth was the Canon guy at 10000 ISO if you could happily shoot at 1100? Seems he needed to slow the shutter and/or open the aperture.

Or Tamron 150-600mm (y)

Like I said, I (we) have tried telling him what settings we are on but still his are far out, not just with his new body but his other.
Again, like I said, I have no idea about Canon cameras and i'm not about to footer about with his at that price...

I think my Tamron must be a good copy, i'm pleased enough with it.
Still to meet up with someone I know has the d500 and Nikon 200-500, to have a blast with his for comparison.

I'm more than happy with my Tamron too.

thanks for the info for tuning
what focal length do you do it a 17 or 35mm 24 or 70 mm 70 or 200mm on my nikon lens's
or do i do it at wide and tele settings ?

I would do it at the focal length you will use most, if that's an option.

First off I wouldn't do any fine tuning unless you see an issue in the first place. AF and therefore fine tuning AF will vary depending on focal length and subject distance and there will be no one fine tune setting that's perfect and so you have to make compromises. If you do need to fine tune then do this at the focal length you use most and at the subject distance you use most (assuming this is workable for the test). There is another train of thought that you should adjust at the tele end if a zoom as this is where DOF will be shallowest and therefore AF intolerances more apparent.

Anyone used the 24mm f1.8g on DX? Near enough 35mm give and take a mm!

If you do do it , do it a few times and average it out ok, the numbers it returns differ most time and not consistent, but a +2 vs 0 isn't a massive change and i doubt youd really notice it, but if you get +2 then a +6 then a +1 pop in +3 and you should be ok.
But as Snerk says unless you se an issue don't do it, its an evil thing to be honest because you automatically do every bloomin lens thinking well just maybe i can get it a tad sharper LOL

If your still worried then i can strongly recommend Focal Pro from Reikan, this will nail it bang on, and even tell you which F number is sharpest on each lens.. really good software...

I find that strange one my 50mm it came back +2 4 times so left it at that.

Sigma came back -1 and -2 that's all so left at -1

yeah its about right, mine sometimes does +2 then - 2 so i just leave it at 0. focal has only ever added +2 onto anything so the d500 seems pretty rock solid thus far.

my D500 says the 300mm f2.8 VR II is minus 16...we`ll see

What's the 300mm been on other cameras? My first D750 needed huge (+12 to +18) calibration on my fast lenses but it had other issues and was eventually exchanged and my new one needs no AF adjustments on any of my lenses.
