hi,
I was looking for some feedback of the d500 with the 'old' but longtime Nikon birdie favourite af-s 300mm.
I've tried searching but keep landing on the combo with the new vr 300.
Just curious if it still performs well and how people find that combo.
I've gone from d300, d800 down to d7100 and soon d500, and found with the d7100 focus was not a perfect marriage like it was on the previous 2.
I also have a 1.7 Nikon tc to play with, wondering if I should sell both for a new vr version or even the 200-500 to go with the new cam. So be good to see how people have found the 300 af-s on a d500.

I haven't used the 'old' 300 with the D500 but I am sure it will be fine ... the 'old' 300 has a great IQ reputation and pairing it with the D500's AF will make it sing.
I have the 300 PF and it's brilliant on the D500 working well with 1.4 and 1.7 converters :)

Thanks gramps, I think that's because I bought your 300 once upon a time :) 5years ago, and bought another since then.

All I can help with Ben is that I need vr and mainly use a tripod, I traded in for the d500 and now use it with my tamron 150-600, loved the 300 with a 1.4 but a heavy beast for me w/out support.
I seriously am considering the 200-500 but waiting to blag a shot of someone I know who has it and the d500, to compare when we catch up again.

Cheers Tom,
I think if weight is a consideration the 200-500 is quite a beast in comparison, a big selling point of the 300vr. I do a lot (at least try to) of kingfishers, obviously static ish on perches so find the 1.7 and 300 great on a baby tripod. I'm thinking the zoom would be cool for the 9 out of 10 times the kingfishers land on the perch you least expect closest to you :)
Looking at the d500 200-500 package as an option but guess it doesn't save much, so will probably get to try the 300 and 1.7 combo first.

Just seen this thread.

To let you know, I have used my 300mm F4 AF-S IF-ED with my D500 for the last few months. I permanently had a 1.4x tc attached to it. It works really, really well.

Am selling my old version as I've just upgraded to the new 300 PF but I upgraded purely because the aforementioned combination was on my D500 99% of the time and I wanted something a bit lighter.

I'd highly recommend it.

However, I paired my old one with a 1.7x tc and the IQ was terrible. It was only after I'd used the combo and saw the resulting IQ, that I then discovered lots online about it not pairing well with the 1.7.

The 1.4 though is amazing with it.

Hope this helps (y)

Sage advice there Ben

Thanks for the heads up, have you tried the new 300 with the 1.7?

Yes, it works brilliantly just like the old one with the 1.4.

Have had one on hire last weekend and I can highly recommend it with the new 300.

But, also, to save some money, the old one + 1.4tc really is brilliant and I would say to start there, unless you can afford the new one and 1.7 tc with no worries (y)

Also, I haven't noticed any IQ improvement over the old 300, it's just nice that it weighs so much less and also has VR. Beware though as with this PF I didn't realise it had an issue between around 1/100 to 1/160 ss, when it renders the image blurry. Have found out this is the issue all over the internet with this particular lens. I'll keep it though as I rarely, if ever, use those speeds anyway.

Allegedly this affected earlier models of the lens and Nikon took action to resolve it, however like you I'm not generally at that low a shutter speed to test it. :)

Interesting thanks again...
We (me and munchycarrot my o/h) have 2 300 f4 afs a 1.7 and a 1.4 with d7100s.
We just decided it was time to upgrade to d500 and she has sold her 300 to get the new version due to weight. Generally I've been using the 1.7 but perhaps we will swap for now then.
Its one thing to find a sweet combination and then the sweet spot at a certain f stop, but for lenses to have a 'bad' spot due to shutter speed is a factor no one needs.
I guess in gloomy U.K. I must have some shots of static birds at that shutter speed, but guess the better ISO of the d500 may help that not happen often.

Typically, I went down to that SS the first couple of days I used, on perched birds to lower the ISO a bit. It was only when I looked at them that evening that they were really bad, which is when I then found out about the issue

That's interesting, Roger. I just bought it new from Jessops, so do you think it's possible they've given me an old copy?

I'll have a look around to see if there are any serial numbers affected to check against.
