D500 shutter noise.

I borrowed a friend's D500 recently, the shutter is so noisy compared to my Z6. Sat in my hide waiting for something to come into the frame to shoot, a goldfinch lands on one of the perches and within milliseconds of the shutter going off....it's frightened off by the 'clunk' of the shutter, then the same again with the next few birds too. Considering the D500 is one of Nikon's flagship wildlife camera bodies, surely they would have developed it with a quieter shutter? .
 
The z6 doesn't have a mirror to flap up, so it will be quieter. Another reason mirrorless is the way forward. I only use the electronic shutter so it's 100% silent.

This is what I use if the need arises albeit I've not had too much issue with wildlife reacting to the shutter sound. The only drawback is a significant drop in FPS.

If you think the D500 has a noisy shutter you should try a D850!!

Compared to the mirrorless Z6, yes, but I've been in hides with other people using a range of DSLRs and my D500 seems quiet in comparison. I suspect, that at the time, and the D500 is fairly old now, compared to other sports orientated Nikon cameras (e.g. Nikon D4) and competing cameras, the D500 is reasonably quiet

I've found the noise to be a lot louder if I rest the camera on the hide (or if others are resting their camera on the hide), so this is something I always try to avoid.
 
I use D500 for birds and never had a problem with noise....

I remember about 12-13 years ago my OH's twin sister bough a Samsung GX-10 (Pentax K10D clone - I had the K10) and she remarked on the shutter noise, which, fair play, was not quiet. This remark was made over telephone and my retort was along the lines....you think that is noisy? I put my Pentax Z-1p on continuous mode (no film), next to the phone and fired that off - they recoiled....
 
just the way it is, if they could have made them quiet they would jump at the chance so they could have used it in marketing

Mine d850 is in the post. I shoot landscape so it's a non issue
 
I only shoot wildlife with my D500 and have never had a problem with shutter noise. - Most of my work, is taken from a hide, so generally, very close proximity to my subjects!

It does. But unless the birds are hard of hearing, its nowhere near quiet. Use the normal shutter and the birds will/should get used to it (so I'm informed)
Or purchase a longer lens or sound proof the camera/hide ;)

I agree, the D500 shutter isn't quiet, even in quiet mode! :rolleyes:

Out of the three D850 was by far the noisiest with D810 being the softest. I owned a D500 and a D810 but have shot extensively with a D850 in the field (Uganda) with a loaner from Nikon UK. The shutter noise was one of the reasons I wouldn't consider it to be a wildlife cam for me. That and the D750.

My D850 comes tomorrow. Although I am a not a wild life shooter I am curious as to the noise it makes. I like the quiet shutter as it dampens vibrations out a bit.

Just imagine banging two rocks together...;)

D850 is loud, not extremely loud, just a different tone/sound to the D500 in my opinion - more clunk than click. My main subject, Otters, do notice it on quiet and less windy days. It doesn't seem to alarm them - but they definitely do notice it. 'Quiet Mode' is slightly quieter, but Otters still notice it. I'm giving thought to a Z7 II for wildlife, perhaps with a D500 for birds in flight.

I think you'll find out soon enough. To me it's like hitting an empty tin can with a stick!

I don't suppose that will make any difference to you, Steve, or any landscaper for that matter. Same applies to the low buffer.
